Help! Major Dress Decision - Conflicted

Karina, on July 22, 2019 at 9:52 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 17
Hi ladies, I really need some input from you all. I said yes to the dress this past Saturday. I bought it off the rack for $600 less than retail ($1500 retail) it’s a beautiful Stella York, fit and flare. It is a size 12, very detailed with lots of lace & beading. This is no doubt the dress I want to walk down the aisle in. The problem is I am a size 0/2 and this dress would need ALOT of alterations and I’m concerned about the design and the whole look of the dress changing because of all the alterations needed. There is also very simple damage in some of the lacing in the back. The bridal assistant informed me that alterations for it would start at average $500 but I think it will be more because it needs to go down so many sizes and all these intricate details to work around. I called the bridal salon today and they would make an exception for me to purchase the new one in my size for the retail price of $1500 BUT I need to make this decision by tomorrow 7/23. My thought is that it will be way less in alterations when it’s almost my exact size (so just bustle, cups, maybe slightly taken in depending on the fit etc). So if you were in my shoes, would you go ahead and keep the sample and pay the $500+ in alterations or just get the new one and pay a smaller amount for alterations? Appreciate your opinion!

I'd go with the new one, there's a lot less at risk there. I couldn't imagine having my dream dress possibly turn out looking not at all how it was supposed to considering alterations will bring you close to the same price new would cost anyway

That's tough. I'm no alterations expert but I think it would be very difficult to go from a 12 to a 0/2 without compromising the fit and detail of the dress. I would pay retail price for a new one. It sounds like you know it's the one!

If you would be returning the dress, you should be getting your money back. If that's the case, and you get refunded or getting it exchanged for your size, it shouldn't be the full 1500. I would definitely exchange it and get the one closer to size.

Going from size 12 dress to size 0/2 is just ridiculous (sorry). The dress will not look the same & it will cost a ton to alter. I wouldn’t go that route, no matter how much I would save. Get the dress in your size (or up to two sizes larger).

If they are using the $600 you've already paid towards the new one, I would go that route. They said starting at $500 so it could end up costing you more in the end and you don't even know if it will look right. Not to mention what if they start and realize it can't really be done?

I'd have to agree.. if there's that much detail and it doesn't come out of alterations perfectly, you might end up spending more on the off-the-rack one anyways!

I'd definitely switch over, if just for the peace of mind; although, you do have plenty of time at least Smiley smile

I would get the one in your size! It seems like any savings by keeping the larger dress would be minimal (~$200-$400?). That is worth peace of mind to me! If it was saving you closer to $800 and up I think that would be a different story.

I'd go with the one that is your size, there's way less risk, and you know that the dress you're getting is how it's supposed to look, and the dress you fell in love with. I've seen too many horror stories coming from people who tried to alter too many sizes away.

I'd go with a new one. I heard it's okay to go in a size or two, but that's a drastic change. Good luck!

Are you a 0/2 in regular clothes, or bridal size? I'm a 0/2 in regular clothes and the size 6 Stella York fit me almost perfectly (just a bit too big). Whatever you do, make sure you get measured so they order the correct size.

Honestly, you'll probably spend $500 on alterations with the new dress. I spent $350 on a bustle, a hem, and having the back/straps taken in a little bit. My friend spent $450 on a hem, bustle, and having cups added. Alterations are expensive so make sure you add it to your budget.

I’m at 0/2 in regular clothes, they measured me an 8 in bridal, but I still think that’s too big. I will be getting re-measured before they place the order for my size. Also, that’s why I’m so concerned about keeping the current size 12 dress, because if it cost that much for those simple alterations, I can’t imagine the final cost of taking in this huge dress multiple sizes plus the hem, cups, bustle etc!

Thank you guys soo much for your advice on this!! I have decided to move forward with getting the new dress, yay! I honestly prefer the peace of mind over saving a little. I just don’t want to end up in a bad dress situation months before the wedding! I feel lucky that the bridal shop owner is even making the exception for me, because they have a strict no refund/exchange policy when it comes to buying dresses off the rack.

Yes I agree with what others have said it would change the look of the dress if you altered it. Too many sizes to go down.

I have a friend that is really small and she needed an 8 in her gown (it was also a Stella York). It came in and basically first perfectly, so I wouldn't get stuck on the actual number size. Ask to see your measurements and the size chart before they place the order to confirm, but an 8 is probably the right size, even if it seems a lot bigger than what you normally wear because bridal sizing is super wacky. I saw that you're going with the new dress, which is probably a good choice! But just so you know, taking in a size 12 dress to a size 8 isn't that crazy since that is only two dress sizes.

I would totally buy a new one. Alterations are great, but I think it will be perfect if it is made in your size.
