Help! Marriage license/birth certificate issue! (california)

Kendra, on October 6, 2019 at 11:41 AM Posted in California Planning 0 2
I was so excited walking into the clerks office to get our marriage license this past Friday but the attending clerk was so rude (Riverside county) and made me super worried that I would “run into legal issues” (her term). I filled out my part to the best of my ability. My father has never been in the picture, and my mother passed away this year so I did the best I could on my own. But the issue is that my parents hyphenated my name at some point (I was in kindergarten or so) and the clerk woman told me that for my last name given at birth I should put my hyphenated name because when name changes happen to young children, their birth certificates often get amended and change to the new name. I did not have any records with me as I live 8 hours away from this county I will be married in. I ended up telling her I’m more comfortable putting the name I was truly given at birth on my marriage license and putting my hyphenated name under the part that asked what my current legal last name is. When I got home, I checked my records and noticed that I do not have a birth certificate copy (but plan to order a certified one) but I do have a two part amendment to birth certificate due to court ordered name change. This document is original and states my name going from my single last name to my hyphenated last name. Will this be sufficient proof that my first given last name was indeed as I filled out on my marriage certificate? The clerk said it has to be what was on my birth certificate but I don’t have a certified copy of my birth certificate (I used this 2 part document for everything; passports, etc). I feel like this official document should prove my name enough for receiving my marriage certificates after our ceremony but I want to be sure. I also noticed it has my fathers state of birth but I had put “unknown” on my marriage license because I truly hadn’t known at the time. Will that affect my license or certificates?? I’m so nervous that something is going to go wrong in getting our marriage documents!!

In California you don't have to get your license in the country you are getting married in. I suggestion going to your local office and have them look everything over, just to make you feel better Smiley smile

A marriage license may be obtained from any county in the State of California (regardless of where you live or where you are getting married), and may be used to be married in any county within California.

This is true. I had gotten a certificate in one county and married in another.
