Help Me Decide My Menu!

Adan, on May 27, 2023 at 3:25 PM Posted in Planning 0 8

After some consideration, I’ve come to agree with many people that our old menu was too long. The nine courses would certainly take too long, and I want people who aren't huge eaters/ foodies to really enjoy as well. We're shortening our nine course menu to six. I was wondering what all of you would prefer.

Confirmed 4 courses: sea bass (main), Guinea fowl or duck (guest choice main), cake, and several mini-desserts

Choose your favorite 2 out of the following: amuse-bouche (four tiny appetizer bites as the first course), oysters (appetizer), celery root soup (appetizer), salad (served French style after the main course. On the sweeter side with poached pears), or a selection of French cheeses (after mains and before dessert)

Also, thoughts on our wedding cake flavors? We're having one cake that we'll cut, but are offering two flavors as an option to our guests.

Cake - Tahitian vanilla, bilberry, yuzu, lavender, and Cuban tobacco

and

"Gâteau de L'équateur" - Ecuadorean chocolate, cocoa nibs, espresso cream, and bourbon vanilla gelato

I'm sorry but I personally think it all sounds gross. I would probably not eat any of that and would end up getting something to eat after the wedding.

If you mind me asking what are you not a fan of in particular. What would you recommend? I certainly can add a pasta dish with a simple meat sauce as that certainly is an option, and I’m probably switching the duck to lamb so we aren’t offering two birds. Anything else?

They just sound like very fancy options. I personally prefer simpler things at weddings such as beef or chicken. I think a simple pasta sounds better. Unless you have guests that are used to things like duck or lamb (I've never had either) then I probably wouldn't serve those. I think it really depends on what your guests like.

I have to agree with this. These are very upscale niche foods that are highly acquired tastes. Unless you know for 100% fact that your guests eat these foods regularly (most days of the week), they will be wasted and not touched at all.

Where this is not a typical wedding menu, I would probably poll your guests, instead of strangers on the Internet who will not be attending the event or eating the food. A lot of the food is very specialized. The reason people typically stray away from this sort of menu is to try to appease as many tastes/diets as possible. If it’s an option, maybe you could mix some more common foods with the options listed here.

Do you have any guests who are vegetarian? If so you may want to consider an entree option that's vegetarian. The pasta dish sounds like a good idea!

I would personally order the sea bass or the duck from that menu. I would not go for the gamier tasting guinea fowl or the lamb. Lamb is admittedly delicious, but even a lot of carnivores will no longer touch it. I'd pass on the oysters. I don't actively dislike them, but they don't do anything special for me, either. I'd be fine with all the other choices.

The chocolate, espresso, and bourbon vanilla gelato cake sounds great.

Our caterer has a separate menu for vegetarians that we will have. Artichokes, heirloom beets, and lasagna with a lentils bolognese are the current appetizer and main courses.
