Help me figure out glasses for DIY bar

Emster, on April 8, 2016 at 1:41 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 11

Our venue is basically a bare lodge in the middle of the woods, and we're stocking the bar. We started to look into rentals (need everything but tables and chairs), and we're struggling to decide what to do for bar glassware. We're going to have beer and wine, and there will be a bartender to serve everything. I'm feeling torn on whether to go with glass or plastic and wanted some advice.

If we go with real glasses, how many do we need for 100 people? Do we need beer and wine glasses? Will people actually re-use them? I'm worried about dealing with a bunch of real glasses because I don't think we can to wash and re-use them on site.

It looks like there are good plastic options at places like smartyhadaparty. I assume we would need multiple glasses per person, but it seems like it could be less of a hassle. Our venue is pretty casual so I don't think it would look weird.

Has anyone done this before? Any advice on glass vs plastic? And thoughts about how many I'd need of each?

I'd do 9 or 10 ounce hard plastic cups. I'd plan for at least 6 PP.

Glass is going to be a hassle; even though people do tend to reuse them, we still planned on 3 PP, which is a lot of glasses.

I furnished my own bar. My venue did not allow glass, so we had to do plastic. You can plastic cups that don't look crappy. I suggest going this route because there are some downsides to bringing your own glasses to that venue.

    a) You will need A LOT of glasses. I think AT LEAST 5 per person. People generally get a new glass every time they get a new drink

    b) How will you wash all of those and keep them clean before the wedding?

    c) How will you transport them out and wash them after the wedding?

People may tell you not to, but I would honestly go plastic. (make sure you have recycling bins!) Obviously, don't get red solo cups. Don't get those half-opaque cheap looking plastic ones either. If you get the crystal clear, harder plastic ones they look better. I had shorter ones for wine, and taller ones for cocktails and beer.

From what your describing I would just go with plastic if its pretty laid back. We had a bar service and they provided glassware until 930 ish them started switching to plastic to make sure they collected all of there glassware by the end of the night. We didn't get a choice in the manner but I could of cared less.

Normally I would say use real glass because it is a bit nicer for such a special occasion but in this case I say go with plastic. People will put down their glass and forget which one it is and then won't have it to refill so you'll have to get a bunch of extras so you don't run out. Or maybe have glass for wine and plastic for beer. Or I've seen on pinterest lately a lot of brides giving mason jars or glasses as favors and having a tag that says "here's your glass for the night" that way people know to hold onto it.

There are really good plastic cups. Try places like oriental trading or Michael's.

I know certain places have plastic wine glasses and beer glasses.

    Here are all kinds: http://www.partycity.com/product/plastic+cups+and+stemware.do

You guys are totally confirming what I was feeling! Plastic does sound way easier, especially if I would need multiple real glasses anyways. FH's parents are really pushing back on having plastic so thought it was time for some outside opinions.

@Kristy Where did you get your glasses? Definitely will avoid solo cups haha.

I got my short ones from a Texas chain grocery store. The taller ones I actually found at Walmart. They were like $5 for 100. They were completely clear, but were a little flexible which I thought was good so that there was no chance of cracking.

    I think they were these:

@2YearsAway That's exactly my fear! I know I'm totally guilty of doing this at weddings too.. Now I feel bad for all the glasses I've left around haha.

@OriginalLaura Thanks for the suggestion! I didn't realize that plastic glasses didn't have to be cheap solo cups until reading forums here lol.

    @Kristy Awesome! Thanks Smiley smile

Just a suggestion for a DIY bar.... don't forget about coffee! A lot of guests enjoy it with cake. I wasn't going to do it but my MIL thought it was a good idea. SO many people drank coffee! Especially because we had Bailey's at the bar as well! Smiley winking

@Kristy Oh man I was totally going to cut coffee and my mom had a total meltdown about it. Decided I'd find a way to make it work, so I'm glad to hear that people liked it! Actually having Bailey's is a fantastic idea -- we weren't going to do any hard alcohol but maybe we can sneak that in Smiley winking
