Help! My dress looks worse at every fitting!

Erin, on August 6, 2024 at 12:17 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 4
Title kind of says it all, but basically since buying the dress every time I go in it looks worse.

For some background, I’m plus size and have a very large chest. I chose a bridal store that had a wide size range and thought that meant I would have lots of options and expertise about fitting my dress to me.
The dress I chose has a sheer top which to be honest is not what I thought I’d pick, and it also has a deep plunge. I like the plunge, but finding a bra/bustier/corset/anything that gives me enough support but isn’t visible under the dress has proven impossible. I originally ordered boombas on their recommendation. Here was my first fitting with the boombas: Help! My dress looks worse at every fitting! 1
As you can see the fabric is wonky, crumpling, uneven, etc. They told me they would replace the cups with larger ones and that would fix the issue.
So then I found out at the next appointment they had removed the cups but didn’t have bigger ones (they never notified or told me, I figured it out when my boobs looked like this): Help! My dress looks worse at every fitting! 2The owner looked and recommended a bra store and that they could find something for me that would give me support which would be a better option than them building a corset or something in the dress. So then I got a bustier: Help! My dress looks worse at every fitting! 3
Way more support, but no cleavage and it’s visible. So the plan was to add lace appliqué to the front to help cover it.
So then I ended up with this: Help! My dress looks worse at every fitting! 4

Maybe I’m focusing in way too harshly, but to me it looks absolutely dreadful. The neckline is ruined, and not only that but they cut the original sheer plunge part out and sewed in a doubled over piece which now sticks out like a sore thumb (along with the threads underneath and mismatched lace). They now want to take it out again and add more netting with a slight dip so it’s not straight across and more lace for coverage, but I’m in complete panic mode now. I absolutely hate how the entire top of the dress looks on me now.
Am I overreacting? Is there anything I can/should do at this point? I’m tempted to start over with a new dress but I’ve sunk so much money into this one (plus alterations, accessories that match, etc.) that it feels impossible.
Any help is so greatly appreciated!!

Can you order an extra panel of fabric from the designer of your dress and see if they could replace the mesh with that color fabric? I had to order extra fabric to cover a sheer part of my dress. I would also consider going to a different alterations shop. See if they can add boning inside the dress so you don't need the bustier. Possibly use the available types of tape as opposed to the bustier.

They told me the fabric to line it would likely take months to come in so that’s not an option. I am likely going to take it to another seamstress at this point for sure. My bust is too large for tape I think, and because the dress is sheer it makes me feel naked and uncomfortable. Definitely will ask about boning or sewing in a corset/bustier/something. Thank you!

I agree with Sara, perhaps you could get some support built in to the dress. Objectively, I think the first one with the tape looks best. I actually like the lace over the mesh, but the lightness of the look is affected by the bustier. I would take it to a different seamstress, look for reviews online and fine a well rated one. I wonder if just sewing cups in could help the bunching under the bust in the first photo.

Having said allllllll of that, it's a gorgeous, gorgeous dress. You'll look amazing!

Yeah, I definitely agree the first looks the best of the bunch—that’s when it still has cups in it and I had boombas that were basically holding my boobs onto the cups. It looked good except the crumpling which may have been because the cups were too small but they couldn’t get bigger ones (also it made the dress pretty uncomfortable because the entire weight of my chest was on my shoulders). Definitely planning to take it elsewhere to see if building something in is possible!

And thank you so much! I love the lace and the color and the pockets (really everything from the waist down lol). I really appreciate the suggestions as well. Smiley smile
