HELP! Our venue has really low ceilings. What can we do?

Anita222, on April 19, 2015 at 8:17 AM Posted in Style and Décor 0 9

We found a really cute venue that has everything we want except the reception hall has really low ceilings. It's a little under 9ft. This sucks! When we thought of our wedding day we pictured a glowing hall with an airy ,"open" feel to it, but I'm afraid because the ceiling is low it will feel sad and claustrophobic. And the ceiling will literally be in every picture. See the too pictures below.

I want to do low centerpieces to draw attention away from the ceiling. We really did not like what it looks like with dimmed lights - when it's brighter is has more of that "airy" feel to it. And we've seen pictures of colored uplighting an it really doesn't look good with such low ceilings. So we're thinking of not dimming the lights at all during dancing, and I actually kind of want to make it even more brighter by adding more lights. Any thoughts? Would having lots of candles on the tables help?

I think more lights would just bring more attention to the ceiling.

I agree. Keep everything low and don't add more light. Wear flats, lol.

Nobody, unless they are 10 ft tall, will look at the ceiling and go "wow that is low". Don't add extra lighting and get the shorter centerpieces. Candles are cheap and get the eye lower.

The pattern of the ceiling is distracting too....and photographers bouncing flash will only bring more attention to it. In the first photo, the photographer shot down on the subjects which helped but that can't be done every shot, as in full body shots it will dwarf subjects from that angle but worked well for that shot. Only solution is for the photographer to take fewer wide shots and get closer in for candids and some dance shots. And compose as carefully as possible for wider angles and leave as little negative space up top as possible. That's a problem for sure, good luck!

It can work if carefully done, but that was a limiting move for them. I've seen mirrors and chandeliers poorly placed where I just wanted to punch someone in the taint for that fine idea. It's good you are diligent on the front end, I've dealt with many oh shits I;ve had to deal with on the fly, oh fun lol.

Get another venue. If you're not totally happy with your choice, change your choice :-)

I'd keep looking around if I were you. If you end up back there, dimmer lighting is better. Think romantic, intimate restaurant.

Low ceilings present a difficult situation for the photographer but if he or she has the right skills can over come the challenge. Off camera flash positioned correctly can produce good wedding photographs that wont show those low ceilings. If you can't change venues and have not hire a photographer yet make sure he or she can handle the challenge of low ceilings.
