Help! Picking the final vendor

Jackie, on November 7, 2020 at 11:27 AM Posted in Planning 0 9
I need help/advice when picking our vendors for an officiant, DJ and cake.
We narrowed each category from 20 to 5 individuals.
Trying to pick a decent quality within our budget. What Makes or Breaks when it comes down to a tough choice. All vendors have been in contact with us via email/Facebook. We haven’t spoken over the phone or in person yet. We thought about doing a zoom meeting. I feel like meeting in person you get more of a feel how someone’s personality is.

Make sure you click with them and are comfortable.
Get a tasting before you narrow down or decide on any baker.

With the tastings, a lot of them said that they “do do tastings for a small amount of guest” (20-30)
    Or charge $40-50 for a tasting. 😩

Do not ever book anyone without getting a tasting first. That includes catering. If you don't, you may be locked into bad food that you cannot get out of. Food is something that makes or breaks the guest experience so it's not something purchase blindly. You won't know if their product is worth the money without a sample first.

Most will apply the tasting fee to the final bill.

Cake vendor does not need a zoom call lol pick the vendor with the cakes you like...

DJ - check to see if they have reviews and videos.
Officiant is the only one we zoomed with before signed a contract.
    Don’t overthink it! 🤍

Totally agree with the food & cake tasting. We did our food tasting before we locked in a contract. We’re doing our cake tasting in January before we sign that contract.

We picked our vendor based on the person we'd be working with. He was super communicative and felt like we could trust him right off the bat. We don't get married until next September, but so far working with him has been great.

Cake - are any of the bakeries you're considering doing wedding open houses? If they're local, can you stop in and buy some cupcakes or something similar? Also look at their wedding cake portfolio and reviews, but as PPs mentioned, you need to have some sort of edible sample. Ours applied the consultation/tasting cost to our final cake bill, and we only had 35 guests.

DJ - check reviews thoroughly, set up a zoom meeting if possible. DJ personality is pretty important imo because they have a big impact on the vibe of the event. We ended up canceling ours, but had met him in person when hiring him initially, and his personality sold us. He was also super prepared and had a thorough explanation of his services, did a great job of answering our questions, etc.

Officiant - also check reviews and set up a zoom meeting if possible. I'm not sure what kind of officiant you want, but there's a range from very straightforward/read from a script, to heavily customized ceremonies. I'd make sure that the officiant is super organized, experienced, and communicates well. This is the one person that absolutely needs to show up on your day!

I’m definitely having a hard time finding a cake person who does tastings.
Are they typically $40 for like 4 flavors to test?
Should I taste 2-3 different places?

I would do maybe 2. Check out their websites to see what flavors they have & the pics of cakes they’ve done.
