Hi! I used to love to run in early high school! I got out of the habit and now I am 22. About 6 months ago I tried to start running again but after about a week of it, I quit because of terrible shin splints. I waited 2 weeks until the pain was complete gone. Now I have went through that same cycle about 3 or 4 times! Every time I start doing good and LOVING my runs, the shin splints plague me again!! I just got engaged on Christmas Eve so now I am REALLY motivated lol. Anyway, does anyone have any tips on how to prevent them?! (I stretch but I don't know the best stretches for this). Thanks y'all!!

I had this same issue when I recently started running again. I had to build myself up distance wise and start out every other day, every couple days. It definitely depends on the shoes I have too. I have a lot of different running shoes and some days some work better than others.

I'm so glad this thread came up, not glad you have shin splints though. I am going through the same thing right now. This is great advice!

Hi! Athletic shoe seller here. I've been off work for a while so I'm probably forgetting some.

You want to avoid anything that's minimalist like the Nike Free or Brooks Pure series. They provide the least amount of cushion and support and will make your shin splints worse. But these are a few shoes you want to look at for what type of foot you have.

    Shoes for flat feet:

    Asics Gel Kayano

    Asics Gel GT Series

Brooks Adrenaline (I'm personally not a fan...they're hard and stiff to me but many people swear by these shoes)

    Brooks Ravenna

    Nike Structure

    Nike Odyssey

    Saucony Guide

    For neutral/high arch:

    Asics Gel Nimbus

Asics Gel Quantum 360/180 (the 360 is the most comfortable non-minimalist shoe I've ever put on my feet...they're just a little heavy)

    Brooks Ghost

    Brooks Glycerin

Nike Pegasus (if you have a hard heel strike)

Nike Elite (if you run on your toes)

Nike Vomero (if your strike is evenly distributed between heel and toe)

    Saucony Triumph

That's all I can think of at the moment. Hope this helps.

ETA: Mizuno is also a good brand but I can't give any specific suggestions since my company doesn't carry them anymore.

Change shoes, insoles, adjust running posture, apply ice, and use calf recovery compression sleeves. My calf felt supportive when I played football. My tibia pain is not as painful as ever. I used it in combination with ibuporfen gel and made good progress and good results.
