Help!! Tips for First Dance & Heavy Train

Angela, on June 28, 2021 at 8:15 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 9
Hi everyone!

Help!!!! My wedding is less than a week away and I’m really hoping all of you can give me some tips on how to maneuver and do a choreographed first dance in a dress with a heavy train. My seamstress ended up doing an American bustle with 2 points. During my final fitting I did try spinning in it, and because my dress is crepe and the train is long and heavy, it didn’t spin as easily. The seamstress told me I would have to kick my train over to the side to get it to move. The more I think about it, the more worried I am about not being able to do my choreographed first dance properly, particularly with my spins. Also, I wasn’t expecting to do a choreographed first dance which is why I went with a long train like this, but we changed our minds after I got the dress, dress train pictured. Help!! Tips for First Dance & Heavy Train 1

Any brides have experience with doing a choreographed dance with a heavy bustled train? Am I worrying too much? At this point, I’m considering throwing on the dress and practicing with my FH or just changing earlier into my second lighter dress. Thank you in advance for your help!!!

What style of dance is it? What kind of spins are in the dance?

Depending on the style of dance, I think a wrist loop might be good for the first dance. If you’re doing anything where your FH has to walk under your arm, it might not work out

Thanks for the suggestion! It’s a waltz, so the loop won’t work. Luckily the seamstress is willing to see me and help me adjust the bustle so the train isn’t dragging on the floor!! Hopefully crisis is averted

A bustle with only two attachment points does not seem sufficient for a train this size at all. My train was a bit smaller, but more intricate lace (less tulle) and had nine attachment points for just the top layer, as well as an additional row of buttons for the lining.

Even with a really well secured bustle, my dress was pretty heavy for dancing. I got a reception dress (that I changed into after dancing started and I realized how heavy my dress was) and was glad I had the option to change.

I kind of agree with Kari, I think it will need more points to be secure, or a long wrist loop, allowing you to waltz. Kari's other idea, a dress specifically for the first dance, might be the best option.

I have a similar issue myself - a very long train and a large skirt, and I am worried about dancing as well, so I do hope you come back and tell us your experience!

Unfortunately my encounter with the seamstress was a nightmare today. I realized that she only hemmed the front of the dress and not around the sides, which leaves all this extra material in addition to the bustle. Good thing is she added 2 additional bustles so that helps a bit, however I’m now stuck with a dress with a hem that’s slightly too long and is essentially a tripping hazard. Because this dress is a rental, it seems to me that she’s refusing to do any more to it. I may just have to wear slightly taller heels for the dance or be extra careful and watch my steps.

On another note, I do have another lighter and much easier to move around dress which will be my last resort. But I’ll let you ladies know how the dancing goes. Hoping I can show off this dress!

My dress is also crepe and heavy. I noticed this especially once it was bustled. I would think for a waltz it’s fine.

Latest update - I ended up purchasing the dress because the shop finally admitted they didn’t hem the dress properly because it was a rental. And fortunately my regular seamstress who also specializes in wedding gowns is helping me properly hem it. She will be removing the poorly done bustle and putting on a 5 point bustle and hemming the dress all around as well so I can dance properly. Thanks everyone for all your help and suggestions!
