Hemming dress with lace detail

Aeriel, on September 22, 2019 at 6:35 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 7
I think I found a great dress by the detail at the bottom has me wondering if this will be able to be hemmed shorter in the front or if maybe a big petticoat might help?

I’m guessing it can be hemmed but it wouldn’t be cheap. I don’t think a petticoat would give enough lift to get that dress off the floor.

With all the lace on the bottom, hemming is going to be more on the expensive side Smiley amazing So I would give petticoat a try!

Depending on the designer of the dress they can sometimes order the dress with extra length or shorter. Mine has similar lace on the bottom. I ordered it 3 inches shorter than the sample dress. The length is perfect on me now. You could ask if that's a possibility at the store.

A good seamstress can hem any dress, they will remove the lace and hem it and then reapply it.

My dress has lace all over the bottom of the dress also. My seamstress removed the lace and then hemmed the dress and replaced the lace. She charged me $230 for the hem, bustle and bust alteration. It looks perfect after being hemmed!

My dress also has lace all along the bottom (lace appliqués on organza), and my seamstress quoted me around $150 to hem it a few inches

If it's lace applique (which it usually is if it is a specific pattern like that), the seamstress actually removes all the applique before hemming the dress and then reapplies it (all done by hand), so you don't lose that detail. It should look exactly the same once hemmed, just shorter. That's why even what seems like a simple hem can cost hundreds of dollars, because it can be incredibly time consuming to do properly on a dress with bridal embellishments like beading, lace, and appliques.

Note: If you try to have your dress hemmed by someone who is used to hemming slacks and doesn't actually have experience with bridal gowns you do run the risk of them just chopping the bottom. Don't skimp on having a qualified seamstress work on a dress with so much detail. Your bridal shop should be able to give you a quote for how much hemming would cost - they tend to know which materials and details are more expensive to work with.
