Hey im looking for a wedding cake for a about 300-400 dollars the most. What is the average price for a cake?

What is the cheaper option of cakes that I should be looking for? And when to order the cake? I dont wanna call the cake maker and not know anything about cakes.

We ordered our cake from SAM's Club. A 3 tiered cake and 90 cupcakes (we have around 140 people attending) for about $150! I did a ton of shopping around and hated the idea of spending hundreds of dollars on a cake.
