Hiring a student videographer can be risky, but it also will be very inexpensive, which is nice Smiley smile Do you live near a university? That's the easiest way...just email their art department or whatever department that would be. Craigslist is hit or miss, but I would defnitely leave the ad up there.

Also, see if local videographers have interns or students who work for them...that means that they are training with a professional, but will be less expensive because they haven't built the credibility. That is the way to go IMO.

Depends how important the video is to you..My dad videoed the ceremony, and also said the reception, but after the toasts there was just a lil bit while he was dancing lol..had I known I would have liked to have a student;not a big deal though. I just wanted like a home video quality..but if you wanted like editing and fancy things I'd go with a pro.

With the student honestly I'd be more worried about their reliability and actually showing up.

Have you really thought this all through? It can save money, but you will definitely sacrifice quality. A student probably doesn't own the professional quality equipment they need to get a decent video. They won't have the editting skills of a professional, nor the experience to understand where they need to be placed to get the best angles, etc.

If you are really considering this, you'd be much better off having 3-4 friends with high quaity digital cameras that take video recording things, then edit it yourself.

Editing 3-4 friends video will be a nightmare... I guaranteed it. I'm a photographer, but I use to do video. Editing is no joke Smiley sad good new is... good, decent video is not as expensive as photography.

What is your budget? $500, $1500? $2000 for video? if you are in CA....PM me...i may be able to hook you up Smiley smile

I will tell you from experience that finding a student photographer is REALLY difficult, at least where I live. I called THREE different colleges. One sent me to a recent graduate who charges the same prices as the established ones.....nope. One didn't respond to me at all....great. And the third gave me some contacts that didn't contact anyone at all....fab!

So I gave up, lol. You can try! Best of luck! =)

At my uni there were a few students who did this to make a little extra money. Obviously I wouldn't do it if video is super important but for a lot of people it's lower on totem poll so to speak so what a student offers will probably fit the bill.

I would contact someone through the university directly - administrator/department head etc. Professors might be a good way to get a recommendation of a student who is reliable.

I hired a student photographer that we found on craiglist. This worked for us because for budget reasons we were going to cut out a videographer until a friend suggested finding one on craigslist.

Your wedding video/film is an investment just like your photos and hiring a student to film it is a risky move. Not only do they probably not have the right video equipment, you have to think of audio too. I'm assuming you want to hear your vows, etc. They also don't have insurance should anyone get hurt on their equipment. The last thing they won't have is the know how to predict when things are going to happen and be ready for them. All of these a professional will give you. Prices for professional videos range in price, but if you budget around $2k, you should get something decent, in most markets.

Is there a film school near you or an art school that has a video department?

If so, post an ad there.

Don't necessarily under-estimate a student videographer...especially if they are in their senior year. Not only will the have access to top of the line equipment and editing abilities...they will also be very reasonably priced.

I am so glad I went with an experienced videographer! I LOVE our video! Even more than the photos.

Having said that. If it is between having no video at all and a student, go with the student!!! I would contact the local community college. They often have students who need projects or teachers who want to make a few dollars so you might luck up.

    Good luck!

I would contact the depart of an art school or university and see if they have anyone they may be able to suggest. I have some friends that I would hire in a second to do my wedding if they didn't live so far away. Not ALL students are unreliable too...if you take your time and choose wisely this could be a great option! I know some would love to have something like that to add to their portfolios. Goodluck! Smiley smile

I'd live without it before I'd hire a student.

On the other thread..bride talking about saving money hiring student...

"another way to save money and still get a good product.

Also...I only saw 1 other video they did...it looked great. I put my trust into these guys...and it totally paid off! I also had 4 camera guys and 1 sound guy at my wedding, so they didn't miss a thing! "

Since I can't respond to that post...(vendor not allow)

I like to say,,,its would only take 1professional and 1 assistance to do what 5 students does...

Can you imagine having 5 video-guys at your reception?

Hiring the right professional give you piece of mind Smiley smile

Honestly I don't think it's neccesarily a bad idea but i think you should be careful. i think you should see his work and maybe have him videotape the engagement party or bachlorette party or something first just to be sure your happy with him. It depends on how important the video is to you. I mean honestly how often are you going to watch it? I personally think the pictures are way more important, I'm having my brother in law video tape it for me, so I really think it's personal preference and I would say just be cautious.

Actually JabezPhotography....you're making assumptions...They blended in so well...even my photographers who are professional photographers and have been doing it for almost 10 years now and were terrified at first when I told them about my videographers where MORE THAN IMPRESSED. None of them were in the way, none of my guests complained...in fact after the wedding, my photographers said my videographers were so easy to work with, better than working with professionals who just get in the way...and that's when there are only 2 of them...they basically said you would have never known I had 5 of them there...and from what I remember, I couldn't tell where 1/2 of them were except when we were getting ready and I told them to be up close and personal for great shots....they did ask me if this was okay. And in fact, I told them that they were allowed to get in the way of guests if that meant they'd get the shot...but never once did I see that happen or hear anyone complain...(cont)
