Hiring someone or DIY Decor

churd23, on January 8, 2015 at 4:14 PM Posted in Style and Décor 1 9

Is it more cost effective to hire someone to do all of the deor or should I buy everything and do it myself. My biggest fear is that I will spend just as much money in supplies to do it myself along with my bridesmaids.

Hmmmmm, I'm DIYing it, but I love see crafts, lol. If you do it yourself, then it's up to you. Are you shopping at dollar tree or Michaels? If you shop at craft stores, are you using all their coupons? So some things it is cheaper to make (I'm making flowers for like $20) but I'm not trying to make tablecloths, etc (that's a dumb example, I know, but its all I can think of right now).

That actually helped me ALOT. I never thought about utilizing Dollar Tree and craft store coupons to make things myself. Thanks for the tip!!

I'm paying a planner. Actually, it probably would have been more expensive for me to DIY. The planner has A LOT of materials herself (table linens, chair covers, etc...) that she is renting to us for free so if I would have purchased or paid rental fees at the venue, it would have likely been more than her fee.

I bought all my own decor. My DOC will handle the actual decorating the morning of the wedding.

My question would be: how much will each individual centerpiece for instance, cost you to DIY?

For most pro florists, they start at minimum $25.

My second question would be: do you have the venue guaranteed for at least several hours prior to the ceremony start? And by guaranteed, I mean written in a contract? Trust me on this, it takes longer than you think to set up. And the venue that tells you don't worry, you don't need it written in the contract -- DO WORRY.

And do you have folks you trust to set it up? Because a few hours prior to the ceremony, you don't want to be getting all sweaty (been there!) and you'll be getting your hair and make up done and getting dressed.

    Best wishes!

I think it depends on the extent that you want to do. Price it out with local vendors/rental companies and see what you think. Also keep in mind how much your time and stress is worth!

I found a florist / vendor who wanted $4k to do mine . I decided that was way too expensive and am doing half of it myself ( eg linens for cocktail reception , lanterns and a few other things) I'm saving around $2K so it's worth the hassle

Unless you're a crafty person by nature, I'd go pro. Adding your time and frustration to the material cost can really raise the true cost of a DIY. I am a crafty person, and I'm considering hiring out centerpieces just because the time gathering supplies, the time spent making them, the time spent setting it all up, then the time tearing it all down is more than I care to deal with.
