Hitchswitch ???

Gracey, on January 18, 2022 at 9:59 AM Posted in Planning 0 7

Has anyone ever used HitchSwitch to change their last name? I just heard about it because of an offer I got from being a Diamond Member at David's Bridal.

If you have, how does it work? Did you like using it? Is it better than having to go to the courthouse?

Most people say it’s not worth it, but I really liked it. You still have to go to the social security office and the DMV, but they give you all the forms, pre-fill them out for you and have them organized in the order in which you need to do them. I also really liked the concierge service and having people I could email and get a quick response to questions because my situation was a little more involved (I made my maiden name my middle name and was also moving states).

If you do a forum search, you will find a number of threads about this. I honestly didn't see the appeal. The forms are available for free online and there isn't much to "pre-fill," as these forms are all about 1 page long. The order is as follows: social security, then drivers license and passport (if you have one), then everything else. Aside from those 3 things and needing to go in person to the bank, I changed my name everywhere else (including credit cards) by just sending a scanned photo of my marriage certificate and new driver's license in an email to things like phone company, utilities, etc. The process was relatively straightforward and the only part of it Hitchswitch would have covered was just gathering the 3 actual forms I had to fill out and filling them out on my behalf. That part took me about 5 minutes total. The going to these places/sending emails is what took the bulk of time, but even that wasn't terrible (aside from the DMV because mine didn't do appointments pre-covid and I waited for hours).

If you do a search, you are paying a company for the convenience of collecting forms that are available for free via a simple phone call or visit to those offices. While some see the appeal, just as many do not. It’s personal preference.

I didn't use that service, but I'm using one similar called NewlyNamed (NN). Like Michelle said, it's really personal preference on whether you think it's worth it or not.

I'm easily stressed and overwhelmed when it comes to finding forms, filling them out, etc., so I really appreciated that NN gave me the forms I needed, as well as pre-stamped envelopes for forms that need to be mailed. I won't have to fill anything out until after we're married and we have our marriage certificate, but it's nice knowing that all I need is in one box ready to go.

If the task of gathering and filling out the documents is creating additional stress with the wedding planning, it could be worth it. I personally wouldn't want to spend money on a service like this when all the forms are freely available, but I'm always in favor of people finding workarounds to simplify the process and reduce stress if that's an issue.

I've tried using it but it's honestly not worth it. You have to do the legwork, they just help pre-fill the forms which are pretty self-explanatory anyway. For everything apart from SSN, driver's license, and passport, it depends on the specific entity anyway and HitchSwitch can't really help you at all anyway. Would not recommend. Just a waste of money.
