H&m Rant

Suzie, on September 28, 2020 at 12:44 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 15

I just need to vent... I received my contact last night from my hair and makeup salon. It states the total amount is due the evening before our appointment. I asked if we could split the bill, because my girls are paying for their own services (I gave them the option, and they decided to do it), and was told no, that it needs to be paid as one lump sum, and that the girls can just pay me individually. I responded again saying that some are planning to use a credit cards, so could they call ahead to make payments on it. Again, no. I am two weeks away from my wedding, and I am just now being informed of this. I am incredibly frustrated, as I was not planning on fronting $400 for everyone's services. I have also never heard of paying for a service in advance, OR making one person cover all expenses. Any time I have been in a wedding, we have gone to the salon and paid on the day individually. I read the contract and it does state that it needs to be a lump sum payment, BUT it also states all services will be confirmed 30 days out. Well, it took everything in me not to respond and point out the fact that they themselves have already breached their contract by giving less notice. I have this place booked for next year as well (our wedding changed to a micro this year, big party next year) but at this point, I don't even know if I want to do business with them again. My hairdresser has also been really delayed with responses, and I had to actually follow up with HER because she never reached out after my trial like she said she would. On top of this, my mother texts me today and tells me she decided not to get her makeup done, which I now still need to pay for, since there is a minimum amount for services. If you made it this far, thank you for reading. I am just so irritated about this all, and needed to vent to someone who may understand!

Sadly, these vendors almost all require payments in advance. Maybe you could have your friends PayPal / Vimeo you so you could make the lump sum payment.
I know it sucks, but just think in a few short weeks you’ll be married

Can your friends just Venmo/Zelle you the money in advance, and then you'll have all of the money to make the payment and they can still use their credit cards?

That’s a great idea! Venmo is super easy to set up and use.

Also echoing and what was said about vendors requiring payments in advance. All of our vendors are asking for final payments prior to our wedding. I think that is an industry standard.

They suggested Venmo, but not everyone uses it. Our other vendors do require payment up front, but I have never heard of this practice from a salon. Just seems to be so many hurdles, with short notice. I could have planned better if I knew earlier!

"it does state that it needs to be a lump sum payment, BUT it also states all services will be confirmed 30 days out."

If it's in the contract, I am not really sure what's wrong? My HMU is the same, fwiw.

Edit: it isn't sudden...it was in the contract.

They responded today saying they can pay me, it's just so awkward lol. I hate discussing money with friends!

I just received my contract yesterday, for services two weeks from now. So it was short notice. A month prior should have been Sept 11 or 12. I was given a quote after my hair and makeup trial, but nothing stating the payment policy.

Yes, that is very true! Gotta focus on the positive, which is marrying my FH. I was expecting payment in advance for most everything, this one just seemed odd to me!

I booked them last year. I was given a quote on services, and was told things could be finalized after the h/m trial this year.

Having done 100s of events in the past, I was surprised by the pre-payment of our reception in full, correction I thought it wouldn't matter if I paid a small remaining balance on the night of - Still not sure I agree, but I sucked it up - LOL...

Unfortunately, all of our vendors wanted 100% of payment prior to the day... best wishes 💕

Believe this is common practice. Even my regular salon requires prepayment once your services booked totals something like $400 or more (so like hair painting or booking you and your bestie for cut and color together requires advance payment). I offered, did not require, on-site hair & makeup for my ladies. I let them know before committing what the rates were, that they were responsible for tip day of and that they could pay me their share any day but wedding day. 😂 In my case by paying a month in advance of wedding day I secured us a 10% discount, so none of my ladies were complaining about me paying early and them paying me later. I will say one of my ladies took about a year to pay me 😑 so I understand your reservations.

Wow, a whole year! That’s crazy lol. A discount would be nice, what a great offer for paying early. At least it seems common for paying in advance. Thanks for the response!
