Holiday Weekends

Alison, on July 1, 2022 at 11:40 AM Posted in Planning 3 34
Is it a bad idea to have a reception on Labor Day weekend? We are eloping but want to have reception afterwards and Labor Day is the only time until October my parents can be there. Thanks for your input!

I think it would be fine. My best friend had her actual wedding on Labor Day last year and she had a nice turnout.

People may grumble about it but the people who really want to be there will regardless of the day. My brother got married Memorial Day weekend pre-coVID, there were LOTS of complaints but they had over 150 people show up soo... Happy planning and good luck!

I think this is a know your crowd sort of thing. Some people like to plan vacations around holidays so they have to take off less work. So those people may decline. Others will probably see it as a great idea, because they not only get to attend your celebration, but they also have an extra day off that weekend, so it doesn’t feel as though the wedding is taking up their whole weekend.

I agree with Cece that it's a know your crowd event especially if you're eloping and only inviting people for the reception. (There have been several posts lately about lack of turnout/RSVPs to reception only events.)

Things might be more expensive on holiday weekends. Catering and flowers specifically might be more expensive than usual. Otherwise I think it would be convenient for most people.

I'm getting married the Friday before Labor day this Year! Everyone we've talked to is so happy about it, they get to party Friday night then have 3 days to recover!

We actually got a discount from our venue for a Friday night wedding, and no other vendors up charged for it being a holiday weekend!

Yes we did ours on memorial day weekend and as long as you send the save the dates for ahead of time it should be no problem.

Labor Day of this year or next year? Guests need 6-12 months advance notice and with limited vacation time they make plans for that early so anything else would be a decline if it is last minute. It will also be difficult to find vendors unless you either DIY at the grocery store or hold out for next year. Depending on your crowd, you may have some people decide not to attend on a holiday weekend if they are not invited to the ceremony. Another option is organize a non wedding related family reunion picnic and celebrate there.

If guests are flying in, airline rates are double, sometimes triple during holidays. We purposely avoided holidays for this reason.

We are having our wedding Labor Day weekend. It is a great weekend because people have Monday off to recoup from celebrating and traveling on Saturday. I’m excited that everyone important to us are available and are willing to travel to celebrate with us.

We're having our wedding Labor Day weekend this year and no one has complained (that I know of). Our guest list is scattered all over the country (we live in CA and are getting married in Chicago). I figured the long weekend would be good for people who need to travel for the wedding without having to take off work, and since most of our friends who live on the West Coast are from the Midwest, it also gives them an excuse to visit family on the trip. HOWEVER, hotels, etc are more expensive since it's a holiday weekend - so book your room blocks early to save your guests some expense.

We got engaged beginning of june and planned for a labor day 2022 wedding. Its doable, but definitely hard to find vendors so last minute. So far only 1 family has declined.

We're getting married on September 4th, the Sunday of Labor Day weekend. It worked out really well for us because our venue offered big discounts for having a Sunday wedding, none of our bridal party has to take PTO to travel to the rehearsal (which we're having on Saturday evening), and all of our guests still have Monday to recover/travel home.

My wedding is Labor Day weekend, and much easier for family. Being that we would probably be having a family gathering or something’s also that Sunday and Monday most people are off. And the venue are cheaper for a weekday event
