Honestly, are silk flower centerpieces tacky?

Bad Wolf .., on January 29, 2013 at 3:44 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 54

Ok so the Mandalay Bay charges $194 per table plus taxes/fees for very basic centerpeices that I dont really even like. They do not allow outside floral vendors so i thought I might order silk flowers. Is that tacky or undesireable? I anticipated spending $100/table, not over $200!

I personally think they are Tacky with a capital T...however, $194 is stupid and highway robbery. What about something else...like floating candles, gems, stones, sand. I think you can find an alternative that isn't exactly flowers.

You could always do something besides flowers.. I'm doing silk flowers for my bouquets but for the centerpieces I'm doing mini chandeliers that hang on a vase with a purple light under it.. Definitely no concern with them looking cheap, but they didn't run too much either!

If you want to do the flower route though, silk is perfectly respectable.

There are tacky silk flowers and there are silk flowers that look real.

I would no way, no how be spending $194 PER table on flowers. If that means something other than flowers so be it. If it mean silk flowers so be it.

I have never seen silk flowers, but I am doing paper flowers in my centerpieces (I have severe allergies and I don't care much for expensive flowers that will die in two days) and I don't think that they look tacky at all. I think if they look good to you, then go for it!

Ok, my theme is basically the night sky and my tables dont have numbers, they have 6 inch planets. I planned to set them in the flowers but now, well, I cant think of what to do for nonfloral that will work into my theme

No. I'm using real touch silk flowers for my centerpieces. I'm submerging them in cylinders, which not only makes them look MORE real, it makes it so people can't touch them to decipher whether they are fake or not.

You definitely have other options. $194 is crazy.

What about dark fabric or netting with stars mixed in. or moss or grass or sand or leaves? Are you allowed to make your own and bring them in?

What about tulle with lights under it to mimic stars surrounding the planet?

If you're doing a night sky theme, then I don't think you need flowers. You could just do centerpieces that light up like stars.

I don't really know how these would work with your planets, but I think they're pretty.

@Roma - I love it! Only problem is that I would need an extension cord to every table to plug the lights in. Wouldnt I? I wonder if they have any twinkling lights like that that are battery powered. Dang, thats a good idea. I would just need to buy little stands for the planets!

They do sell lights that have battery packs, you may just have to search a little.

I'm making paper flowers and wildflowers from our farm, if all goes well on the prairie! Silk flowers, if done right, can be QUITE attractive. the kind you get from the dollar store, of course not, but good ones can actually look very nice.

I dont think they are tacky. I think that is a old way of thinking. Most people spend A LOT on real flowers that just get tossed after the wedding. Good silk flowers look just like real ones and they dont take away from the look you are trying to achieve.
