honeyfund

LazyAssMama, on January 3, 2011 at 2:33 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 17

So we are not registering for anything for our place, and I'm looking into this honeyfund so we can have our honeymoon. It says FREE but is it really? can someone explain it a bit better since it doesn't give too much detail. Has anyone used it? how did you like it?

Apparently, HoneyFund itself does not charge fees (unless you upgrade your membership). However, you will incur PayPal Charges when you get the money.

There is also a conceptual issue with any honeymoon registry, which is that what you get is basically cash. (No matter what you say it is for, you can in fact just take it as cash.) The point of a registry is to tell your guests what you would like, if they choose to give you a gift. However, you don't really need a registry to tell guests you'd like money--everyone does. So people who prefer to give gifts rather than cash don't get any guidance from a honeymoon registry. And people who prefer to give cash can just do so directly, without the registry.

If you just want money, you can decline to have a registry at all.

I am using ourwishingwell.com same concept it is free until you withdraw funds through paypal. Paypal charges a 3% fee to do a direct deposit. But if you request a paper check it takes longer but is absolutely free.

We are using honeyfund and we have explained to many of our friends and family that it essentially is like giving us cash to help recoup monies already paid in booking the trip, help us with the balance due, and help us have money to spend on activities and excusions while we're there. Everyone has been very receptive and totally excited about the idea, so I guess its just a matter of letting people know the details of the site up front so they don't feel bamboozled.

My cousin just did this for their honeymoon to Ireland. Rather than people pay online and her be charged...Everyone just printed what it was that they wanted to pay for and put it in the card with the check or cash for them.

If you scroll down on the site below they have a comparison chart on some of the top ones. My FS isn't comfortable with asking people for things and this really makes her feel bad about it. I don't either but I feel it's better than asking for things we don't need.

My thinking was that we do a honeymoon registry for 'add-ons'. Not the trip itself because that would be paid for already. But for things we might not ever afford to do or plan to do while on the honeymoon (ex: parasailing, snorkeling etc...) or lovey things like having chocolate covered cherries delivered to our cabin, use of the spa etc... http://www.creativehoneymoonideas.in...try-reviews-2/

At any rate we are going to end up doing the regular registry thing like a Target, Walmart or Bath & Beyond. I guess after 11 years together we just don't need any more 'stuff' and this is something I won't remember when asked 'do you remember what I got you for your wedding gift!?!?', now a chance to water ski.....hell yeah I remember! lol

We are kind of in the same boat- I came across this site and decided to give it a try- www.uponourstar.com ??I am just getting started so I will see how it all works out but I have one friend who used it and LOVED it, so I am very optimistic!

Anyone else use it or something similar? Anything I should know?

You can register for more than a honeymoon, but "wishes" like services on your honeymoon, car, mortgage, etc! Maybe people will feel better ...

We did a honeyfund registry for our wedding and no other registry. We actually ended up getting a ton of money. We still had about 5 or so people bring gifts but everyone else either gave us cash or check at the wedding or paid with credit card through pay pal on honeyfund. We actually had people tell us they loved the honefund but lots of people were afraid it was an unsecured site (even though we assured them it was safe). Because of that they just gave us money personally and didn't even go through honeyfund. SO, ultimately, if your goal is to get money because you don't need anything for the house (which was our case) then honeyfund is great. And yes...it is free for the basic account, which is essentially the same as the "elaborate" account you can buy. Only difference is more picture options. Not worth the upgrade. Good luck!

I just went to a wedding back in December and they had a honeymoon registry. I'm usually opposed to asking for cash in anyway, but they had it set up where they had a list of activities you could pay for while they were on their honeymoon. I LOVED that. We paid for them to go on a little cruise to a private island. I just got their thank you card and I love that they thought of each guest when they did something.

They also had a traditional registry as well, which I thought was nice, so you didn't have to buy honeymoon activities if you didn't want to.

Thanks all! Sharon, that's what I'm doing... setting up activities I would usually not pay for myself. We plan on going to a island in the philippines since FH is from there so will be leaving our 4 year old with FMIL and taking off to an island for a week and come back and enjoy the rest of P.I with FILs

We did the same thing with depositagift.com it rocks for honeymoon registries! but the best part is that you can put other stuff on it too -- basically anything that you couldn't put on a traditional registry. so we added donations to a charity that's important to us, as well as contributions to our first real sofa Smiley smile

Totally! we love ours with uponourstar.com- i did a ton of research and i really think this one is the best. none of them are free, not even honeyfund (unless you want to do the IOU version, which i wouldn't recommend because then guests still have to mail or bring the gifts). this seems to have the lowest fee and they let you choose who pays for it. most other sites don't offer that option. i think it is by far the classiest and easiest to use; gifts are made by credit card, so it's just like a regular registry. they help you create your gift list with this really neat tool. and they give wording suggestions for how to position it to your guests, which was super helpful. we have been super happy so far, with how easy it is to use and the customer service.

If you don't like the idea of "asking for cash" or just "getting cash", Honeymoon Wishes (www.honeymoonwishes.com) has it set up that if you are going to one of their partner hotels, they can send the gift funds directly to the property so that you have to use it there on the gifts that people bought for you. Our friends liked that we set ours up that way so that they know we're really going to enjoy the experience!
