Honeymoon flight upgrade?

Gen, on July 25, 2018 at 3:52 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 14
So my mom told me that on her honeymoon, they told the flight attendant they were on their honeymoon and got bumped to first class! Granted this was about 25 years ago, so I’m pretty sure they wouldn’t just do that anymore, but I’m just wondering if anyone has tried this and succeeded? Or if not, when is the best/cheapest time to try to upgrade? (Our plane does have business class seating but it was like $4,000 or 135k Miles per ticket to upgrade 😖)

It's worth trying for sure! We've gotten hotel upgrades for special celebrations before.

I haven't tried it but you might as well try. The worst they will do is just say congrats. Maybe they will give you some free food or drinks if nothing else. I was on a flight last year where the flight attendant gave us half our food for free because she said that she thought we had the worst seats on the floght.

As a frequent business traveler and the daughter of a commercial pilot, i'll tell you that the airlines are in it to make money. It's not likely that they;ll give you better seats for free when they can get someone to pay for it. Making friends with flight attendants may definitely get you a free cocktail now and then.

If you want upgraded seats - sometimes they'll sell you upgrades within 24 hours of departure for WAY less than booking ahead. 2 examples:

    1) Some friends of mine flew to the Maldives earlier this year on Emirates. Originally first class seats would have cost $50,000 when they booked. They kept calling and checking upgrade prices periodically before they left - but even the day before they were like an additioanl $5,000. When they arrived to check in the day they left -- the were able to buy the first class upgrade for only $900. Patience is a virtue!

    2) Last year I bought a ticket to Paris for $600. I kept calling periodically to check to see if I could use my miles to upgrade the overnight flight (Dallas to Paris) to First / Business. I was "on the list". Finally, the day before I left - they processed it so I used miles + $200 and rode in first class!

Haha that’s amazing, we got free drinks one flight because my friend’s TV screen wasn’t working (he really didn’t care, was planning to sleep the whole flight anyway hahaha) but they insisted on giving us free drinks the entire flight 😂

I figure they’ll at least do something like that but I have a feeling they’re not going to be able to upgrade us... fingers crossed!

My friend does option 1 every single time they fly and they fly out of the country at least 4 times a year and pretty much every time get the last minute first class upgrade for dirt cheap.

Thanks for commenting! Definitely going to try this! FH wants to fly first class, but I’m so frugal when it comes to flights lol glad I saw this.

Good tips!! We will try this too.

Kind of related: We always ask the concierge to call for tables at popular restaurants if we’re celebrating and have them mention that we are to the hostess. Sometimes they have relationships and we’ve gotten champagne on the house, dessert and a fab table.

I would think it would be unlikely because there is usually a miles/member participant on board that they will offer the upgrade to if no one is paying for it. It is possible but it would be a small chance you would get it. however, it never hurts to ask! I would definitely call and discuss options with the airline. You might get a nice person that will tell you the easiest way to get it at a discount!

It's not first class, but we volunteered to sit in the exit aisle, which has a little more leg room. They had accidentally sat a family of 6 there and also someone with a cast on their foot, and needed able-bodied adults to volunteer to sit there instead.

We were surprised to learn that we got free cocktails for sitting in the exit aisle, which seems counter-intuitive to me, but we only had one drink each.

My cousin, who travels more frequently than I do, said she and her BF always go up to the counter and volunteer to sit in the exit aisle, even when they're not asking for anyone to do so. She said it usually works (but never had the experience of free booze because of it).

Genevieve where are you guys flying for your honeymoon?
Option 1 is probably the best bet although depending on where you guys are heading and the time of year a lot of people will upgrade at the last minute.
