Honeymoon ideas during hurricane season /budget

Lynne , on August 9, 2017 at 10:27 AM Posted in Honeymoon 0 28

So we're getting married 9/9/2017. No honeymoon planned. Desperately need to get away for 4 days; nervous about it being hurricane season. Any destination ideas or reasonable deals? Would be departing from NJ

We went to Cancun a couple years ago during hurricane season (Spetmeber 10-20) and it barely rained. Maybe for a couple minutes on 3 to 4 of the days, but the rain was actually quite nice!

As someone who has worked in the travel industry for years: just go. "Hurricane season" doesn't mean there will be hurricanes. (And "not hurricane season" doesn't mean there can't be one.) Hurricanes are rare. You wouldn't avoid the entire Midwest and South in spring and summer because there might be a slight chance of a tornado. You wouldn't avoid California...well, always...since there could be an earthquake.

Book a trip wherever you want to go. Buy travel insurance just in case.

If you aren't set on tropical, DH and I just went to Narangansett, RI for a week with his family and it was wonderful! It's not far from NJ so 4 days would we fine, but such a cute little town! Beach was nicer than we expected and the food was amazing.

I have friends who honeymooned on St. Maarten during hurricane season and it rained for three days... they still had an amazing time. They swam in the rain, made friends with the bartenders, and didn't give a damn about the weather. I wouldn't hold back because it's "hurricane season." You'll have an amazing time no matter what.

I live on the gulf coast. Hurricane season is something that you know is a possibility but you don't plan your life around it. Example, we go to the beach every August for a week. That's the peak of hurricane season. We just get trip insurance on the condo and live life as normal. There's always a chance one will hit, but hurricane season goes from June - November. We can't not plan a vacation during that time on the off chance of a hurricane. Also, I took a cruise several years ago. We were supposed to go to Mexico, but a tropical storm was there so we were diverted to other places instead. We still had a great vacation.

I would recommend a nice B&B in Cape May. Tourist season is over by then and hurricane season isn't usually bad at all. We did four days as a mini moon in Cape May and it was great.

What about Cape Cod? Driveable, and it's technically offseason so you may be able to find a good deal. If you're stuck on somewhere tropical, what about western Mexico? Low hurricane risk because it's out of the gulf, and usually reasonable.

We're going to the Caribbean during hurricane season, but our travel agent said the southern islands don't usually get hurricanes, so we'll be fine. We got travel insurance just in case though.

With only 4 days I'd probably stay fairly local. I vote Rhode Island.

Since NJ schools start around then you should have your choice of just about anywhere around and be good. NJ shore (lots of nice b&b's in Cape May), Niagara falls, NYC, cabin at one of the hundreds of campgrounds in NJ NY or PA, or even one of the cheesy Pocono honeymoon "resorts" (I have a few friends that have gone to them for just weekend getaways and really enjoyed their time there)
