Honeymoon - Maui or Kauai

Liza , on April 26, 2012 at 4:09 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 14

FFIL travels a lot for business and has tons of frequent flyer miles that he would like to give us as part of our wedding present. We wanted a fabulous beach and nature vacation so we've ecided to go to Hawaii since it's someplace we've always wanted to go but haven't primarily due to the costs.

I've heard good things about both islands and I'm having a really hard time trying to decide which one to go with. We'll probably only have 7-8 nights there which is why I'm not just doing both of them....and we'll be heading out the second week of September.

I would welcome any personal experiences or recommendations that might help me to pick the most fabulous honeymoon location! Thanks Ladies!!

While I haven't been to Kauai, my fiance's sister just got back from there a couple of weeks ago (while we were on the Big Island) and we were all in Maui last year for her wedding.

Now we both loved Maui. I'd live there if I could. 7-8 nights is a pretty decent time to stay but I'd say it would be possible to enjoy both islands if that's in the budget. Kauai is very tropical and much more secluded. If you're looking for things to do, you might get bored towards the end of your stay. If you like sightseeing and a more quiet feel, you'd probably still really enjoy Kauai. Fiance's sister did complain about the abundance of chickens that were everywhere - on the roads, beach, etc. So if you don't like chickens....

Maui has a lot of sightseeing as well but we decided to skip that part while we were there. Lots of people do the "road to Hana" which has windy roads with beautiful views and waterfalls - that's probably what I'd end up doing when I go there again. (cont)

Lots of honeymooner's tend to go to Wailea where many of the resorts are. The beaches in that area are beautiful and since you'll be there after school starts, I woudl think it'd still be really relaxing. When we went, we split our time up and stayed in Wailea for a few days (for the wedding) and then went up to Lahaina for several more. Lahaina is where the cruise ships often port so you'll get a bunch of people dropped in the town in the middle of the day and you'll see lots of tourists at the shops. Both areas have surfing, stand up paddleboarding, snorkel options galore so you definately won't run out of things to do if you decide to stay there the whole time.

So if you're looking for lots of activities and the option to just stay at a resort and relax on the beach, I'd say go to Maui. If you're looking for complete seclusion and relaxation, check out Kauai. Happy planning!

Lol, yeah there's chicken's pretty much everywhere. But I never got harassed by one while sunbathing on the beach Maui..which apparently can be an issue in Kauai.

I vote Kaui (but like Stephanie said, only if you're looking for a more quiet honeymoon). I traveled there in May of 2009 for school and went to Kaui, Oahu, and the Big Island, and Kaui was by far my favorite!! The snorkeling there was amazing. We hiked, snorkled, spent some time on the beach. You could even take a boat ride out to the Napali Coast. If you're looking for something more laid back and quiet I would definitely recommend Kaui!

Maui! Here are my top picks on Maui. Plus, there seems to be more activities there vs. Kauai.

    Kula Lavender Farm

Haleakala National Park (watch the sunrise at the summit)

I agree w/the other posters. You have to decide what you want to do. I've been to Maui (10 years ago this year) and had a great time. My FH & I are going to Kauai for our honeymoon. Kauai is great for doing things outdoors (hiking, off-roading, snorkeling, scuba diving, zip lining, etc). Its quieter, less popular, so there isn't as many things to do. You also drive a lot to get to things. Maui is more popular but not as popular Oahu. We decided on Kauai because we love to just hang out and do nothing. We really don't drink nor do we like busy crowds. We will be there for 6 days and hope to do a snorkeling/sailing tour and we will be going to Waimea Canyon.

Maui is kind of the happy medium between Kauai and Oahu.

Wow never been to either. If you can manage it and are able to, I would say both.

But either one sounds amazing. You are so lucky!
