Hot or Cold Plate Wedding Dinner?

Hiya, my mom told me what they used to do at weddings was have a Cold Plate dinner. Meaning they would have Ham/Turkey/Roast((One or the other, maybe two)) (cooked, but room temperature? idk how to explain it) and then their would just be pastas, salads and stuff to go along with your Cold PLate...

Hiya,

my mom told me what they used to do at weddings was have a Cold Plate dinner. Meaning they would have Ham/Turkey/Roast((One or the other, maybe two)) (cooked, but room temperature? idk how to explain it) and then their would just be pastas, salads and stuff to go along with your Cold PLate dinner...

Or would you prefer a hot plate dinner? with the same Ham/Turkey/Roast options..

I dont know if i like the idea, i am just wondering what you all thought about it?

Hope this makes sense, if it does not I will try clarify better.

THanks Mrs F-u and Theresa, i know that they wont matter.. But that is just something i do, im a stresser haha. i stress over big and small things. I just want things to be done good. and i would rather ask the woman on here who give me honest opinions, rather than my friends and family who keep saying " Its up to you do what you want" yes, i know its up to me but i want your damn opinons haha!

I will not be doing a cold dinner, it will for sure be hot plate, thanks again everyone!

I think it MIGHT (might) be okay for an afternoon reception (I am imagining an upscale deli platter), but definitely not for an evening meal. Honestly, I'd probably go with something cheap like pasta before I served my guests deli meat and rolls.

I went to a very low key wedding reception once where the bride and groom served cold Subway take out - and cocktail shrimps. It was like a football party - very weird but it was TOTALLY FINE! Everyone ate and danced their butts off. It just was not formal at all.

I understand Leesha, I don't "stress" about much but am very much about the details. It dawned on me the day after the wedding that the things I put the most thought and effort into I didn't get to even see or experience. I am happy I put in the effort but the only people that really noticed were the people I am closest with (and those people I mentioned each thing to so they knew what to look for). I agree about asking the people here because people in your life will just want you to be happy and won't offer the same feedback.

I agree with Mrs F-u....the things that you all make yourselves sick over are things that no one notices, to a large part. I understand your enthusiasm; I traffic in enthusiasm and there is so much that is fun about weddings, but when it gets to the point where you (not you personally, but the corporate you.....) are stressing over the groom's suit matching the favors or how to propose to your bridesmaids, then.....you have to step back or your whole process is going to be no damn fun.

Great food, a pretty place, good music, lots of drinks and OMG, WHAT A DRESS!!! That's where to put your passion and energy, not on hand stamping cocktail napkins that four guests will notice.

My best advice? Think about any given thing until it's no fun and then let it go. But have a hot meal unless you're doing lunch in the summer.

I had a 2:00 afternoon wedding, when i married my late husband and had the cold plate lunch. It was the way it was done. You really had 2 choices (unless you were very rich) chicken dinner buffet style (no apps nor desset other than cake) or cold food which included turkey and ham...and maybe roast beef but usually just the former two, buns, a macaroni salad, potato salad, potato chips, pickles, butter mints, cake, coffee, and punch. And usually your bridal party helped prepare it all except the potato salad which either your gramma or aunt made homemade. Lol. Ahhhh the good old dayswhen you cold feed 150 people for $500. :-)

Here is a pic of a portion of our cold food spread. Everyone had plenty to eat, plenty to drink and loved our cake choices. I think it can work, especially for a small, casual afternoon wedding like ours was. We had our reception at an old one room school house in the country.

Personally as long as it tastes good and not something that gets gross when it cold I'm totally fine with it not being hot. most anyone I know wouldn't care either.

^^ no, definitely do not do whatever you are comfortable with in regards to food and bar. I am a super picky eater, eat like a 5 year old and a have two food in tolerances. Unless we were to serve wants to eat gluten free chicken tenders and french fries, we cannot be doing what I'm comfortable with.

The same goes for saving money by doing cold deli meats at dinner time. Yes, you are a bride, but you are also a host at a very large event. Everyone should also keep that thought in the front of their mind, the wedding is NOT all about the bride.

Lol my mom seriously was saying I should do Ham sandwiches. I looked at her like she grew two heads. Um to me that is food for graduation, showers and other such events but not the wedding. For a snack that is what I am offering the wedding party plus who ever else is around at that time the morning off the wedding.

As a cold buffet for LUNCH (not dinner) I would rather have gourmet sandwiches on delicious breads and buns, wraps, pasta salads, potato salad, green salads, etc. Not cold meats on a plate. That sounds like what they used to do in the 50's or 60's or something, in the church basement. I don't think it's done much anymore.

If its tastey and the time of day is appropriate, theres nothing wrong with hosting a cold afternoon lunch. JK8115 am i supposedto call you and make sure my food meets with your approval to make it appropriate? With all of your eating issues i would hope you eat before you come, because it would be pretty hard to please you. If i were invited to a friends wedding and had severe food issues, i would eat before i got there and not expect the bride to change her menu for me. Jmho :-)

@mrscheap, lmao you want guests with allergies or dietary issues to eat before they come rather than accomodate them, like a good hostess? Lol. Wow.

I personally hate room temperature, or cold dinners. It drives me insane. Please serve a hot plated meal.

I have an entire family of people who would love to be served a cold plated meal -- if the meal was sushi, lol. For them, that would be the ultimate wedding meal. Me? I'd be looking for something hot.
