Hotel blocks?

Emilee, on June 5, 2019 at 4:21 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 8
So I’m in a bit of a dilemma. My FH family mostly lives in our state, but a couple of our guests will have a 1-2 hour drive to get to our wedding. His mom, brother and grandma all live in Florida (we are in Ohio) but his grandma and brother aren’t confirmed yet because grandma has breathing problems and brother is going through divorce/custody battle. Do we need to block hotel rooms off? His mother will be staying with us because the house we are moving into has a spare room, but would it be rude for our other guests?

We only had a handful of confirmed guests needing a hotel room, like 2-4 rooms max. So we didn't make a block. If you think 10 + rooms will get booked, then I think it'd be worth doing a hotel block.

Not sure what would be rude for your guests. In this case I don’t think I’d bother with a block, but I’d do the leg work and come up with a list of
about 3 or so hotels that would be convenient to your venue and put that on your website if you have one or simply tell guests if they ask

I would do at least 1 complimentary block nearby. It won't cost you anything, and it gives you 10-15 rooms (you can always add more) for guests so they aren't stressing about finding a good hotel nearby.

It's a nice gesture, but you're not required to have a hotel block! They're adults who are able to find their own places to stay

I have a similar situation with some of my guests. I am just leaving it up to them to figure out their own accommodations.

It doesn't cost you anything to do it (at least for a lot of hotels). Why not just make it easier for your guests who are interested in staying the night? Plus a lot of hotels offer discounted rates for your guests, and possibly a free bridal suite for you guys, when you block rooms.

Agreed - at the very least, you can recommend places to stay, but a block should be free (and at a discounted rate for your guests), so I'd do it even if you're only expecting to need a few rooms.
