Hotel location

Jacqueline, on June 6, 2022 at 6:54 PM Posted in Planning 6 11

So we’re trying to find a hotel to book a room block with and coming up short. Our venue is an hour away. The hotels near the venue are fleabag looking places. So here are our options:

Hotel A: 30 minutes from venue (45 minutes from home) $179-199/night

Hotel B: airport hotel 40 minutes from venue (25 minutes from home) $169-189/night

Hotel C: hotel in home town 1 hour from venue $129-149/night

Which would you choose? We would provide transportation from hotel to venue for guests. Also entertaining doing a family brunch the next morning at or near whichever hotel we choose.

Hotel B seems like a good compromise as it’s the middle of the price range and distance range, and it’s also closer to your home.
If the transportation you’re paying for is going to be more expensive though for those ten extra minutes, consider Hotel A.

I’d choose Hotel A, mainly bc of the 30 mins from the venue. Especially if after the wedding guest are going back to the hotel vs. home. For me, I like pay for convenience, and if spending a few extra bucks to be closer to the venue I would do that instead.

Of those options I would choose hotel A. Mainly because if I’m driving more than 30 minutes to get to the hotel I’d rather just drive home and sleep in my own bed.
As a guest I might also look into Air BnB’s in the area because those can sometimes be cheaper and nicer. So don’t stress yourself out over this, guests can find their way around.

If I were providing transportation I would go with the more luxurious option such as option B or C. Even though it is a bit more expensive your guest will appreciate being in a nice and comfortable hotel as opposed to fleabag motel.

I would probably go for Hotel A or B. An hour is way too long. Hotel C is just way too far. At that point, I wouldn't bother even staying at a hotel.

Can you choose two different hotels with different price points? I would prefer the closest one, but it could be out of some of your guests budgets.

I was thinking of doing that but if we did that I’m not sure if we would be able to provide transportation to and from the venue for both hotels.

I'd actually recommend getting a courtesy block at all 3. With courtesy blocks, you don't have to pay for any rooms not used, and if any aren't booked by a certain date, the hotel just puts those rooms back on the market. Then you can pick one of the hotels to have the shuttle pick up from (or have it make multiple stops if that's feasible) and have a note about it on your wedding website. Then guests have options and can pick whichever works best for their plans.

You mention the venue is an hour away. Is that from your residence or where your friends/family live? Local guests will drive home so you don’t need to worry about them. In our circles and among people we know who live in other areas, guests only take advantage of hotels if they have to fly in or drive more than 2 hours one way. Traveling guests take care of their own travel costs and accommodations (transportation, lodging, etc). Is there competition in the area for lodging at the time of your wedding? For example, spring break, a hot balloon festival, comicon, a ski resort during tourist season? If not, a block is optional but you can let guests know on your website or via word of mouth if they ask which hotels are within a 10 mile radius and let them decide what they can afford to book. A block doesn’t offer a lower rate most of the time, as they are only intended to secure the room, and many times that comes at a premium.
