Hotel room rates too high?

Shannon, on January 8, 2022 at 11:40 AM Posted in Planning 0 8
Hi Ladies. My wedding is at the NJ shore on the water during the high season. Rates for discounted rooms are $240 per night. I realize this is high and knew this going in as this is where we live and always wanted to get married by the water. Anywhere you go within an hour or two will be the same rate. FH and I are thinking of covering $100 for each room to make it more affordable for guests. This will cost us up to $3500 which is a lot. However, I don’t want guests to feel it’s too expensive to come especially those who are flying in. I’m torn. Is this rate too much?
Please help provide your input. Thanks!

I don’t think it’s too much, but I also live in a high cost of living area so hotels are always at least that much when we stay overnight somewhere on a weekend. I wouldn’t worry about covering it for your guests unless you know some of them wouldn’t be able to afford it.

If it’s within your budget, I think covering half the room is an incredibly generous offer that your guests will definitely appreciate!

I agree with PP. it really depends on everyone’s financial situation. But if I were a guest I wouldn’t mind paying that knowing the high cost area and that it’s on the shore. I think it’s an extremely kind gesture, but you shouldn’t feel like you need to help them.

For some it’s a lot and others won’t mind. You don’t need to cover anyone’s hotel expenses but definitely list a Motel 6 or Super 8 for anyone who is on a strict budget.

It’s really not too much. I just attended a wedding at the Jersey shore for NYE and paid more than that. If the guests know enough ahead of time, it’s not a problem. They can also search nearby if they want to try something else.

Have you tried talking to the hotel directly and asking them for a bigger discount? Or even looked at 3rd party sites like expidia and booking?

Yes, the discount is non negotiable. I checked Expedia and all weekend dates are blocked out so that’s not an option.
