Hourly wedding planner?

Hawa, on March 22, 2021 at 11:15 PM Posted in Planning 0 12

Hi everyone,

I am a bride-on-a-budget, meaning we only have about $2500 to spend on our July 2021 microwedding. We only have 20 guests. We will be holding the ceremony in the park in Orange County, CA, then moving to another location down the street for the reception. I have already found a venue that is affordable, and a caterer who is also graciously affordable. The only thing is our venue requires us to hire a wedding planner. My fiance and I are completely ok with ditching the typical wedding frills and just happy that our friends and family will spend the day with us. I will be DIYing the table decorations (only 3 tables lol), bouquets, boutonnieres, I already own table linens, and we won't be playing any music/having a dance floor. The caterer is the only vendor we have. This will have an intimate dinner feel lasting about 2-3 hours.

I have been asking around for different rates for wedding planners and most quotes are $600 or above, which is way too steep for us (which would make it the largest part of the budget). We would only really need someone to help with setup and cleanup, and I just don't know if that's $600 worth of work (unless I am WAY off then someone please set me straight---all this wedding stuff is so new to me). I've explained to the planners that we will only need the bare minimum and that it's only because it's required from the venue, but this all still feels very expensive.

Is it possible to hire a wedding planner for $300 or less? How do I communicate my needs with wedding planners that I will only need the basic?

Thank you!!!

Would your venue allow you to hire a day of coordinator from thumbtack? That might be more in your price range. Professional planners probably won't want to book a day for $300 when they could book a bigger project for that day, especially if your wedding is on a popular day. $600 for a planner is extremely low in my experience.

Definitely check thumbtack.com. Let them know your budget and they will work with you.

Hire a wedding coordinator rather than a wedding planner. A wedding coordinator just helps in coordinating for the day of while a wedding planner plans everything that leads up to the wedding date. They are typically cheaper.

So.... they require a wedding planner, but won't provide one?

That's REALLY strange. I would push back on it, and ask them if they have "preferred vendors"... that might help give an idea of why they are so insistent.

Yup, it's required to reserve the space. Hmm I never thought twice about it but that is odd lol. Thanks for bringing this up!

That is the size gathering people have for a big Sunday dinner, and there is no excuse for such an expense. Either say no, or find a good temporarily unemployed bartender who will do it for $250.

Do they need to be certified, bonded or anything?
If so, I’d hire a college student or even high school student that I know to help set up and clean up and call them a wedding planner.
I bet people have picnics at the park with more people, do they require even planners for everything or just weddings?

I don't know CA law, but I doubt there's any kind of licensing for a wedding coordinator/planner. This seems really strange, maybe you could offer to do wedding insurance instead? I think plans can run pretty low budget depending on needs.

Absolutely clarify with the venue, because requiring a vendor like that is just weird. There's too many DIY brides out there for something like that to really work.
