Housewarming Party - For Buyers only?

Angelina, on January 18, 2012 at 5:50 PM Posted in Community Conversations 1 11

So we're getting this AWESOME flat in the city. Naturally I want to throw a party and suggested having a housewarming party! As we're all talking in a group, I overheard one girlfriend ask smirkingly, "Why would you have a housewarming party if you didn't even buy that place?"

I wasn't planning on setting up a registry like she did with her housewarming party (which comes across as tacky, I think), but just wanted to have a gathering to create new memories and of course show off new apt. But now we feel so offended about her comments.

Is it wrong to have a housewarming party if we're renting?

I've been to housewarming parties for not-so-awesome apartments! I think it's totally fine and don't see a problem with it [: Go for it!

Should I still call it a housewarming, or just a party then?

... I don't want to invite her either... Smiley tongue

If you moved into a new place you can still have a housewarming party. You dont have to actually buy a place to have one. That's ridiculous. Its a new place and you are making it into a home regardless of whether you rent or bought. And whoever that is, definitely don't invite someone like that. Seems to me that person is completely stuck up. And just so you know, even if you decide not to have a registry or anything, most people will still bring something to a housewarming party whether it be a bottle of wine or some flowers. So forget her. :p <- this is my raspberry.

My FH and I had a housewarming party when we first moved into our apartment. Most of my renting friends have had housewarming parties when they've moved into their places, as well.

I have never been to a housewarming party, however, in which the hosts created a registry for it. I agree, that's very tacky.

Whenme and the FH moved into our first apt we had a house warming party. We made it known that gifts werent necessary but a lot of people brought things like wine and giftscards anyway. It was a great time!

I agree house warmings are great.. no need for registry.. cause then people feel like they have to bring something rather then just bringing something to drink or eat.

I have been to several housewarming parties where people are renting, not buying. I'd say go for it, that's a perfect occasion to celebrate and get together!!
