How big of a cake for 75 people?

Kristina, on December 10, 2020 at 2:34 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 12

Hi all! We're planning a wedding for (hopefully) next year and I was wondering how big of a cake we need for 75 people? If you're having a similar amount of people, how many tiers are you planning? I see all these wedding cakes on Pinterest that look so tiny - even with 3 tiers - and I'm thinking they would never feed more than 10 people lol

I would just check with your cake baker- they are experts on these things. I had no idea how large ours should be either, so I just told our baker how many people we need to feed and she told us how much cake we needed. (We are having approximately 50 guests, and a two-tier cake)

We also have a 75 guest count. After working with our baker, we landed on a three-tier cake (6"-8"-10"). Each tier will have three layers. They estimated this should be 78 servings. Definitely a question to ask bakeries as you are doing tasting as they are the experts and will be able to guide you best!

Wedding cake slices are tiny. Picture your normal birthday cake slice and cut that into 1/3. If you are having catering staff cut your cake, that is the standard size and will not cut larger without explicit instructions. This is something to discuss with your baker.

I agree with others to discuss with your baker. We designed our cake and told them how many people and they made sure the cake was big enough to feed everyone.

Agree with the others. It's weird...they DO always look so small. This is one where I vote: Trust the experts!!

Thanks, everyone! I realize I'll need to discuss it with the bakery but I just wanted to be sure I'm not overthinking it. I've only ever been to 2 weddings and they were both so long ago! And I don't think I ate cake at either lol

Our original cake was going to be 4 tiers, for 130 guests, and that included us keeping the top tier for ourselves.

We downsized to 35 people and had a 2-tier.
The bakery won’t steer you wrong!

As others suggested, ask the bakery for their input.

That’s a question to ask your baker. We’re having around 80 guests & our cake will be 3 tiers.

Like others suggested, talk to your baker! As for cakes that appear so small but feed large crowds— a lot of times there are sheet cakes of the same flavor in the kitchen that are cut and served. They taste exactly the same but are less expensive because they don’t need decorated so intricately and are easier to make. This allows couples to have a smaller, fancier cake to cut into while still being able to feed all the guests!

Are you going to be serving any other desserts at your reception? Not all people will eat cake and if there’s other dessert options some people might not even get some but in the end you should talk to the Baker
