How big should the centerpiece be?

Lacy, on December 15, 2009 at 9:57 PM Posted in Planning 1 21

So the guest tables at the ballroom will are 72" in diameter. About how large (wide and tall) should a centerpiece be for the table? I'm really afraid that our centerpieces will be super small compared to the tables.

Oh and we are doing submerged flower centerpieces with no candles, floralytes, stones, and round mirror.

It really is a matter of personal preference. a 6 ft round really is not that big of a table. i personally don't like tall centerpieces on the table. it doesn't matter how nice they look i just don't like sitting there with stuff looming over my head and then having to compete with the centerpiece to have a convo with the person across the table. and the centerpiece doesn't need to take up a huge space.

Hi there! In general, your centerpieces should be no taller than the height of your wrist if you sit as if you're going to arm wrestle (elbow on table). As far as width, 72" is a big table. If you're doing wine glasses & water goblets, chargers, etc. the space will be filled a little more. You could get a larger mirror (sold at floral supply and craft stores) to put under your centerpices and add votives & rose petals around it to fill in the space. Anytime you put a mirror underneath a centerpiece, it'll make it seem larger, especially with candles reflecting the romantic light. Hope this helps!

Right! I don't want tall centerpieces either. I was think that since we are doing submerged flowers that we could use cylinders as tall as 12" since we won't have the added height of the flowers. Do you think 12" is a good height? I believe that is below eye level when sitting.

@Stacey, we aren't doing wine glass or anything like that. I found some 12" round mirrors to put underneath them and some flower blooms to scatter.

Sweet, that's what I was thinking. At first I was only going to do one cylinder of the mirror, but I don't think that is enough.

If you already have your mirrors, that will pretty much determine how wide your CP's will be. A single cylinder on a 72" table will look really small. I would recommend using a 14" mirror and at least 3 cyilnders and some extra votives to help fill the space. If your venue doesn't allow candles, consider flameless candles or more LED lights. Some stones or petals sprinkled around will also fill some space. As far as height, you should avoid anything too bulky in the 14" - 24" height range, they should be shorter or taller than that.

I agree with celebrations.....one cylinder with submerged flowers will look 'lonely'....it would look great to have 3 vases, perhaps of varying heights, and you could use a floating candle on two of those vases if you prefer not to have more flowers in them or want to keep your budget as low as possible. having the tallest vases 12" works well - good choice there! and, yes, scattered petals or stones along with votive candles will greatly enhance your centerpiece and give it a lot more presence on the table.

StacyWyne: I just have to ask why only that tall? I see a ton of gorgeous thin and tall centerpieces. So long as they are tall enough to go over eye level, shouldn't that be ok too? I only ask b/c I love these and want to do it at my wedding.

PS sorry to hijack the post...I just had to ask her.

The tall CP's look great when mixed with some lower CP's. It creates a lot more visual interest when you look out over the room. I think what StacyWyne was referring to is that in order to not block the line of sight, you should not have anything bulky in the 14"-24" range. Meaning that you can have tall CP's, just keep that area open. Another thing to consider is that with such a large table, people won't be able to talk across the table anyway! The height thing is just part of the principles and elements of design.

Hey, just wanted to say that I was reading in a bridal magazine that I just picked up, and it said that there is nothing wrong with high centerpieces, b/c it showed that majority of ppl sitting at tables are only talking to the ppl seating next to them, not across from them. (I will have to check out which magaz I read this in, when im home from work - but thought I would let you know) Jlacy - I like the idea of the cylinders, but thought flowers had good idea of 3 with varying heights. Im not doing something big, just mason jars with flowers - but I do like your idea!

I found 7.5, 8.5, and 10" cylinders that I'm going to be using, so we are going with the varying heights. I need to ask my venue if candles are allowed. If they are we will add candles to the top, if not, we are going with the submerged floralyte.

Jenn, quick question--how large are your tables? We have 6' round tables and I was wondering if 3 mason jars with flowers would look too small/short. I'm having trouble finding something just a little bit taller (~12") but not too wide. We have a few votive holders as well. Is that similar to your setup? Thanks!
