How Can I Keep Flowers Cost down?

CK, on February 16, 2011 at 11:46 AM

Just got an estimate for flowers at our wedding : decor (centerpieces, table pieces, etc) + bridal party for 2x what we wanted to spend. What are some ways we can ask the florist to be flexible & still capture most of the style we are after?

To keep costs down I did only a few BIG centerpieces to make the room pop & have more simple centerpieces w/ candles on the other tables.

First make sure you are using flowers that are in season for your wedding. That is probably going to be your biggest price saver. Flowers were much more expensive than i anticipated them being but the florist explained to me why they keep going up and it all made sense!

Just be honest with your florist and give them a budget they will work with you if they really want the business.

Use hydrangeas for fullness. That's what we are doing. We're getting 9 centerpieces that are low lying with just hydrangeas (25 each including the vase, which we keep.) One huge buffet arrangement (lots of different flowers) and then my bouquet and 3 bms bouquets, 3 wristlets, and a throw away. All under 800. We did not do any boutineers and instead they have inserts for their tuxs. That's 3 bucks for each of them instead of 70 bucks for us.

Keep in mind, it takes more small flowers to make a bouquet or arrangements. The bigger the flower the less of it you will need.

My advice is to put your flower budget into your bouquets and cut the cost on your table pieces. There are many things that you can do to get a beautiful look on your tables. Also, silks are a wonderful choice. Some companies offer rental pieces like we do....think about renting your table pieces! Saves a lot of money!

Carnations are inexpensive & pretty when grouped together. They can also be found in many different colors.

I haven't seen anyone mention anemones. They are so pretty and my florist actually said that they are one of the cheaper flowers.

Ranunculas, sometimes they are so beautiful you cant stand it and sometime they are not. Did I say sometimes they are not. You just never know until they arrive from the wholesaler and I never think they are inexpensive. If you like your florist I am sure she will help you with your budget, that what we do.

Do centerpieces with minimal flowers. Use stones, floating candles and one flower or so per each table. Our venue would not let us use silk flowers (this would have probably cut down on the cost even more so). See my pic. I think we had like about 24 tables so this considerably cut down on the cost of the flower budget. I also used wine bottles with homemade labels with table numbers that I made with my home printer and computer.

You may want to look into garden roses as a sub for peonies as well. Tons of colors, roses are cheaper, and beautiful... and they smell good.

Ask for in season flowers, make smaller center pieces you do not need $200 tall center pieces, use pew bows to decorate the edge aisle seats, see if you can take ceremony flowers to the reception.

I'm ordering mine from online floral distributors and doing all the arranging with some help from friends and family. I picked out 250 roses, 72 garden roses, 80 blue hydrangea, 100 carnations and greens for under $600. Thats 18 centerpieces, 3 bouquets, 11 boutineers...with flowers to spare for the cake, flowergirls and the ceremony!

But If that is in no way on option for you...ask the florist if YOU can purchase the flowers and just pay her to arrange them FOR YOU. I have heard that some will do this. Hope that helps...if you want some websites I have the cheapest flower ones I could find!

I'm not sure what your price is looking like but consider using their hurricane lamps and votives and sprucing them up. I think if you are able to use what they offer it might help with the price.

We are only doing flower bouquets and 2 displays at the ceremony site which will be re-used for the buffet tables.
