How did you find your traveling Makeup Artist for your wedding day?

Kathryn, on June 11, 2014 at 12:26 PM Posted in Planning 0 19

I'm really trying to find a makeup artist/hair stylist to meet me at my venue on my big day. We have a salon we can use on the property for all the girls to get ready! Its awesome! I have used google, yelp, and wedding wire, but it seems I get a lot of "spotlight" vendors. They are in LA, OC, and beyond and I'm getting married in Fallbrook CA (which is over an hour from these places) I can find plenty of the make up and hair stylists, but they are located in their salon and won't travel. I have only found 1 girl that matches what I want and for preview and wedding day hair and makeup (airbrush) and a couple goodies (emergency kit with hairspray, lipstick, they feed me a light breakfast on wedding day) she charges $420. Is that reasonable? As a girl who wears maybeline makeup on a daily basis I'm totally lost on how to find them/what prices are!

Note: I am in Temecula Valley, CA (about an hour north of San Diego)

Sorry you are having this issue. My MUA is travelling, but she had a minimum should would travel for. If it was only me I would have to go to the salon, but since it's the whole bridal party, we meet the minimum she is travelling to us. Maybe ask some of the previous vendors you talked to if this is possible, maybe offer to pay a (small) fee.

My MUA charged $140 for me (trail and day of) and $65 for each bridesmaid, I'm in Chattanooga, TN.

BTW I think the light breakfast (one less thing if have to worry about) and the goodies are a nice 'extra' in what you were quoted.

Did you try checking out reviews from other brides at your venue on Yelp? They might have listed who they used. That's how I found a lot of my vendors (planning a DW).

We found our makeup artist at the salon my mom regularly goes to. Surprisingly it's very affordable and so is the hair (she doesn't charge more for the bride). Airbrush makeup (with lashes) is $85 and regular makeup is $65 (this is her traveling to us so I'm not sure if the prices are the same as in the salon). I know my hair lady doesn't charge extra for coming to us and I believe it's $65 for each of us.

When I was looking for someone a little closer to my house for hair and makeup for my boudoir shoot, I stumbled upon a girl somehow after searching hair and then seeing she also does makeup. When I searched just makeup, it didn't come up, very strange. She travels too but her cost was considerably more.

I used the vendor tab on WW, read the reviews here and then looked at other sites for reviews (and their facebook pages to see client photos, etc.). My traveling MUA charges $90 for travel which wasn't to bad. She's doing my hair and make-up and hair for my MOH and FG.

I'm paying $260 for hair and make-up on the day of.

Is the $420 just for you?! If it's for your whole bridal party, that's a good price. My hair/MUA is $470 for me and my 5 bridesmaids, including the $70 travel fee to my venue the morning of. I found her at a bridal expo in my town back in February. I love bridal expos! You should look for one in your area.

The $420 is only me on the consult day and wedding day. It is airbrush make up, eye lashes, hair, goodie bag for both the wedding day and a goodie bag for a honeymoon (not really sure what that is... lube maybe?? haha) and breakfast the day of. Looking at makeup in my area about $150-$165 not including traveling rates seems to be the norm for airbrush, and for hair it seems to be from $75-$100+, so she seems reasonable. I just cant seem to tell FH that hair and make up is going to cost $400 for just me! Yikes!

@Bethanie I also just googled bridal shows about an hour raidus of me and there is nothing until the end of September. I would think that is quite late to book for a early December wedding... Just my thought Smiley smile

I think $420 just for you is kind of high even if they are giving you a light breakfast and an emergency kit. You can ask them you don't want that stuff. I think about $100-150 just for make up is fine. Add another $100 for your hair.

You can go to your closest mall and go to the makeup counters-- most of the ladies do side jobs outside of the make up counter.

I know people who worked for MAC and went to cosmetology school and they do a good job. But I'm weighing out costs before I decide.

You could always ask your vendors (photog, venue, etc.) if they know of anyone. Otherwise I just ended up going to Nordstrom and asked if any of them could be hired out to do my makeup for a wedding.

$420 sounds high though. I'm paying under $200 for mine (can't remember the exact amount).

    Hope that helps!

Just wanted to say that I thought the $420 was for everyone, not just you. That does seem high.

I asked my photographer. He gave me some fantastic references for MUA's who freelance for weddings on weekends. They were all people who he'd worked with before on shoots or at weddings.

Thumbtack.com let's you put in a request for a hair/makeup artist, and you can specify that you want them to come to you and what area you're in. Then they give you estimates and you get to pick. You might want to check on reviews or examples of their work before you select one, though. I've never used it, but I've heard good things.

That price is and is not high. In MN I have seen them charge that much for just the bride and not give all the goodies. So for being in Cali I would say it's more reasonablly priced. I am a cheap person and am having a heart attack trying to find some place since they charge so much. I finally found one that I could get it done for under 75 for hair and makeup.

Ask your photographer for suggestions of MUA's they've worked with. You'll get some local options that way. Venue would also be a good place. If you have a salon, see if any of the girls you like there will travel. And of course do a trial and make sure you like THEIR makeup, too. If they look too sloppy, unkept or too much makeup for you, it's probably not going to be the best fit.

I did more research and found a lady that will do airbrush for $125 and hair for about $75 Day of and the trial run is only $50-$75! I'll contact my venue as well to see if they have any other makeup artists they work with! Thanks again!

Ouch! I'm in Sacramento and found mine through our venue, as a prefered vendor. I paid $50 today for a full hair/MU tril and I am paying $35 for an onsite fee. Total I will pay $850 (or $835,I can't remember off the top of my head) for 11 people, this is full hair and make up for myself, our moms and 7 BM's and includes the on site fee.

I haven't booked or done my consultation yet (wedding is 11-23-14) but I have been looking into cosmetology/beauty schools and also on Craig's List and have found some reasonable MUA.
