How did you go about settling on a Dj?

Amanda, on August 16, 2023 at 11:06 AM Posted in Planning 0 4

Hi all!

How did you go about settling on a DJ? I feel like everything else was a bit easier because I could see a sample of the product before hand. For instance, I could taste test a cake or see a venue all set up or look at a photographers portfolio. But for the DJs, it seems like none (or very few?) do live showcases so I can't really see them in action. Other than reviews and the general vibe that I got from talking with them / their representatives, I am not sure how else to come to a decision.

Any tips would be appreciates!

Thanks in advance!

Ask them if they have any videos from the weddings they've DJ'd. Specifically ask for ones that show them doing the wedding party introductions at a reception, transitioning from one song to another, and people dancing to the music. If they do have videos, those would show whether they bring a lot of energy to the event, whether the transitions between songs are awkward, and whether they're able to get a lot of people on the dance floor. Check out their social media accounts to see if they've posted any videos, as well as read the reviews posted on Google.

I interviewed 3 DJ's - never met any of them in person. #1 sounded "put out" ... know what I mean? It left me feeling very doubtful. The second DJ is the one we ultimately went with. It really was an instant "click" - he was fun, engaging and asked lots of questions and answered MY questions without hesitation. His reviews were stellar. #3 seemed very nice, but wasn't willing to customize or adjust his package to meet my needs. Our DJ - Fitz Otis - knocked it out of the park. The dance floor didn't die down until 9:45 , fifteen minutes before the end of the reception. I say to trust your gut.

I used thumbtack.com. They show rating, hoe long they were in business etc. They have where you can put in your price range as well. you can interview them as well.

Social media is very helpful here. A lot of them have videos posted (this seems to be a very self-promotional profession lol). And they might post upcoming gigs, so then you can go check them out at local events. It’s not the same as seeing them at a wedding, but it can show you if they’re good at reading the room, if they have any annoying traits, and just their general vibe. We lucked out that we had seen our DJ perform a couple years ago, so we specifically sought him out.
