How did you pick your Mua?

mrswinteriscoming, on June 21, 2021 at 1:20 AM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 3

I had a MUA lined up who had been recommended to be by a few people and was fantastic at what she did, but I parted ways with her over the weekend due to unprofessionalism. She agreed to do the wedding in February 2020 before I postponed and then agreed to the new date but never issued me an invoice to put down a deposit despite me chasing her for this multiple times. Fast forward to this past weekend when I again asked for an invoice and she revealed all her assistants were booked for the date - even though she knew for the past 18 months that I would need 2 MUAs for the day, she never booked anyone for it.

Thus, I’m now at square one trying to find a new MUA.

I’ve gotten a few quotes now and I’ve scoured the Instagram portfolios of a few people but I can’t tell who to pick for a trial because they are seem just as good as the other. A makeup trial will cost me $140-200+ depending on the MUA so I can’t afford to do multiple trials, perhaps 2 at the absolute most, hence I’m struggling to decide who to pick!

Help me out ladies, how did you pick your MUA?

I also found this difficult, especially as some MUAs use editing, so it's hard to tell what their actual work looks like.

Would you consider sharing the instagram links of your top few? Makeup is a HUGE hobby of mine and I had some elements I looked for specifically, but it can be hard to articulate what they are without examples, although I'd be happy to offer a second opinion on your options, if you think it would be helpful?

Also, maybe share what elements are most important to you - do you want light, fresh, and 'you without makeup but better'? Full-on instagram contour? Retro? Glamorous? Maybe share your inspiration pics too to help me understand the brief?

For me personally it was really easy to choose. I chose the MUA who does my makeup for everything. A few years ago, I made a post on social media for recommendations and her name came up alot. I looked through her portfolio and she did my makeup for a night out. It was absolutely flawless, ever since then I have been going to her for years.

I had an easy experience picking mine. I knew I wanted someone close to our venue (which is 2 hours away from our hometown), that way I wouldn't have to spend a lot on a travel fee. I just did a quick google search and pulled up all of the ones near our venue, and compared prices, packages, and looked them up on social media to look at photos and reviews.

I ended up calling them and booking my hair and MUA the same week, and will give them a call in a few months to schedule my trial!
