How do you dertermine postage on Invitations?

Brittany, on May 4, 2011 at 2:25 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 17

I havent bought them yet, but i was curious on the best way to find how much postage i need if i dont know the exact weight. also i have RSVP postcards that i am going to be purchasing as well...

It may be kinda a "duh" thing and just to take it to the post office but i was just curious what everyone else has to say or did their selves

Assemble one and take it to the post office, they will tell you. I am planning on going to the PO at the end of the week and weighing both.

    Letters

    Weight Not Over Price

    1 ounce $0.44

    2 ounces $0.64

    3 ounces $0.84

    3.5 ounces $1.04

    Size limits:

    - Rectangular; length is the dimension parallel to the address.

    - At least 3-1/2 inches high by 5 inches long by 0.007 inch thick

    - No more than 6-1/8 inches high by 11-1/2 inches long by 1/4 inch thick

    - Up to 3.5 ounces

    - Surcharge will apply for nonmachinable letter

** Letters that meet one or more of the nonmachinable characteristics below are subject to the $0.20 nonmachinable surcharge. For items over 3.5 ounces, see Large Envelope or Package.

It is a square letter (the minimum size for a square envelope is 5 x 5 inches.)

It is too rigid -does not bend easily

It has clasps, string, buttons, or similar closure devices

It has an address parallel to the shorter dimension of the letter

It contains items such as pens that cause the surface to be uneven

The length divided by height is less than 1.3 or more than 2.5

Careful - Invites with ribbon can make the invite too thick and cost extra postage too!

    Square invites cost more.

Take an assembled one there and have it weighed and measured. They will tell you the official stamp requirement. Above gives you an idea of how they figure it out.

Oh my goodness! Please assemble one and take them to the post office to be weighed! We just sent off our invites Monday and just did not think to bring one in and have it weighed and had already stamped them with 44 cent stamps (ones with the 2 wedding rings on them). We get to the post office and check just to be sure and ended up having to add 20 cent stamps to them! 20 cent GEORGE WASHINGTON stamps next to our wedding ring stamps! I realize it's just stamps but a part of me wanted to cry but then I quickly saw the humor in it!

Don't be silly like us with our wedding ring and George Washington postage! Smiley smile

You have to weigh an assembled version, and like the fabulous Miss Hayley indicated - odd sizes also add to the cost. Destination is also a variable - we had several international, and that is obviously more. there is really no other way to estimate it, as there are just too many possibilities.

@haley is right and @me22487 is right put one together and bring it to the post office. That is your best bet. I have a feeling they raised the postcard stamp so check that out too. www.usps.com

Hey, rates went up on April 10th. The first ounce is 44¢ but each additional ounce went up to 20¢ so now 2 ounces or less is 64¢ not 61¢.

But, the best thing to do is to take one to the post office to have yours weighed and they will tell you the correct postage. Also, note that if they shape is square there is another additional charge - and that's another good reason to have them inspect your invitations up front before putting postage on them.

I just ordered my 64¢ stamps from www.usps.com. They have a new wedding cake at that postage rate, and it is lovely. I also ordered the new wedding Forever Stamp for my RSVP cards.

Your best bet is to take a sample invte to the post office and let them weigh it for you to be sure. That's what I did for my SDT's and invites. Price wise Haley has broken it down for you so you can have an idea at what you should expect for pricing. I can't remember how much the SDT's were but I just mailed my invites and they were .61.

The rates go up every year and they charge extra if your invite is larger than the standard 5x7" size. You may want to save $$$ and hand deliver the invites to close friend and family members who live in your area, of if you are invited to a gathering and you know some of your folks will attend, they would be thrilled to get the invite in person. This is acceptable provided these are close folks! You will still have to mail to others! Good luck and best wishes!!

Take it to the post office. My invites should have only cost the 64 cents but because of the width (due to bow on invite) it ended up costing me $1.05 a piece.

If you haven't already ordered your invitations, choose a standard shape/size to save on postage.

Here is the 64¢ stamp that I ordered from www.usps.com

I also got the new wedding Forever stamp.

They came very fast, and they only require $1 shipping and handling no matter how many stamps you order.
