How do you make extra $$ for your wedding?

JennaPie, on March 19, 2013 at 6:58 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 54

We have been working really hard to limit spending and save the budgeted amount each month, but I have been doing side jobs to make extra money for the wedding. I babysit a few evenings a month, and I am doing some data entry for a family friend's business when I have free time. Usually it helps me earn a couple hundred extra dollars a month, which goes a long way.

How are you making extra money for your wedding? Odd jobs? Selling your unused stuff? I'd love to hear about it!

My tax return! I'll use it for hair and make up (paying for the other 1/2), my fiance's wedding band, and his wedding gift...anything left over will go to our savings after the wedding.

Taking on more at work to make more $.

We cut down on some stuff, like cable, smaller cell phone plan, grocery shopping is a science, I cook. I love cooking and it's better for us, so that's not a problem. I have to say I still don't miss any of the things we cut.

I can't add more then I have with work right now (just picked up more hours). FH though has a billion things going right now trying to make some extra dough...bless his heart. He is doing fireman training, working a store once a week, doing late nights watching an elderly gentleman and he is a park ranger. He is amazing!

I took on a couple editing freelance jobs in addition to my regular job when we first got engaged, before the planning really started heating up. I finished them all by Sept. when we went on vacation. Helped put deposits down on our vendors.

You can try mystery shopping (go to www.volition.com). I just also blogged about using discounted gift cards for your everyday purchases AND for things you need to buy for your wedding. I use www.ABCgiftcards.com (I am not connected with them), and you can buy discounted cards for the things you buy every day anyway, like Starbucks, repair stuff, clothes, etc. I think it's a really great idea.

    Lol Lynzey your awesome

We put our tax return and our year end bonuses towards the wedding. Picking up any extra days available, FH did a huge side project for the company and is doing some work for his mom so she can have reason to pitch in w/o other brothers getting pissy. Lastly I've been trying to sell everything possible on craigslist that we no longer need.

I've been trying to pick up extra days at work (every now and then I have the opportunity to work a weekend with over time pay, but only when new foster carers need training).

FH earns a salary and commission, so the more he sells, the more we can put towards the wedding.

We have also cut down our spending considerably. No take-out, no alcohol, no frills brands, planned meals, no unnessecary clothes shopping etc.

Write out a detailed budget for your spending and bills and wedding budget. Figure out how much you need for bills, how much you need for groceries, petrol & living, then figure out how much is left over. Or figure out how many pay days til the wedding, and how much you need to save each payday to get to your budget.

I have also been trying to sell my old clothes on facebook garage sale groups. Not a lot of luck lately, but I have also moved house to a lower socio-economic area, which may be why the facebook selling hasn't worked as well. I'm going to change to ebay.

I'm contemplating robbing a bank in the near future.

    Okay. Maybe not.

I think even if I had time for another job, I'd never have the energy! I set aside all of my tax refund and I try desperately every paycheck to set aside as much as I can. So far, it's not working very well since I don't make much money Smiley sad

Using vacation days to work a second temporary job! I feel guilty about it for some reason!

Lynzey, are you and Amy related? You two together in Vegas would be a movie.

To answer the original question, mainly budgeting, planning out driving routes to save gas, selling things I don't need on Craigslist, the usual. I also try to do marketing research -- Plaza Research (they have offices nationwide, I think) will email me with different studies and you answer for ones that you're interested in/might qualify for and they call you if they need you and you get paid. Been called twice now, but haven't been able to go in for a study yet. I seem to be a bit overeducated for most. :/ But my co-workers daughter has gone to a couple and made a couple hundred bucks to answer questions for a few hours.

Ahahahahahahaaaa Lynzey, I wish I could! Since I work 2 full-time jobs already there is not much left except denying myself everything. I work any extra hours I can. The check engine light coming on in my car today does not help the situation.

I guess I need to get on craigslist and sell some stuff.

Since your wedding is about a year away, what kind of money can you making using what savings you already have? Can you buy 9 month CDs? Maybe getting a higher-interest savings account?

I know a lot of people think credit cards are the devil, but if you use them for expenses you already have and pay them off in full each month, you can earn a pretty penny in rewards in a year.

I'm putting my tax return towards a few things. I have always been good at saving, so I just take a little out of my savings account here and there if I need it!

@Fluffy, heard. I don't think credit cards are the problem, it's not knowing how to use them to your advantage.

We have Discover cards that give us cash back on our gas purchases, restaurants and more at specific stores through Shop Discover. I can use that money towards my balance or to get gift certificates for things I'll use (like a $25 BB&B gift card for only $20 as a wedding gift, double the money towards a car rental for our honeymoon, etc.)

But no matter what, it's paid in full every month, I've never paid them interest.

I sell Avon. Plain and simple. It's not oodles of cash, but what I make gets squirreled away in our wedding fund.
