How do you pick a Dj?

Jade, on January 9, 2020 at 4:33 PM Posted in Planning 1 8
I just started looking at DJs and I don’t really know the best way to pick one. They all seem to have great reviews and the same prices and I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed with it. How did you guys narrow down your DJ choices and is there anything specific that I should look for?

I’m a customer service snob, so I scratched a bunch by just how they responded (or not responded in some cases.) Cross ref my remaining list with reviews from people I actually knew. Ended up with the guy who reached out to me to check in on my decisions. I work in sales, so I can appreciate a good follow up. Haha 😁

You might want to ask if the DJ has done weddings at your venue before. It might be helpful to be confident they know the acoustics of the space prior to your wedding. But this isn’t a deal breaker - just an idea if you want to use it to choose between similar DJs.

I was between a couple and in the end I chose one a bit more expensive but he came with a photobooth package so it made more sense to me to have one vendor vs two separate vendors for that

Phone calls were helpful for me! I'd come up with an idea of what you are looking for in a DJ (beyond good reviews & in budget). Do you want them to provide microphones for the ceremony & speeches? Maybe provide a monogram on the dance floor, uplighting or something else? What kind of music do you want to play at your wedding, what kind of dancing is most typical of your group? We wanted a DJ familiar with country, but also more trendy songs. I wanted a fun DJ but not a cheesy one that made people "dance for your dinner" or "sing for your supper". We wanted a party & lots of dancing later in the night, but a formal (not club) vibe in the beginning. Talking to DJs helped to get an idea if they were on board with what we wanted.

I chose my DJ because of their presentation and how professional they are. The package comes with an emcee and DJ for the price of one. He provided a short presentation to me and showed me a ton of pics. I also like how their set up doesn't have their logo large and center like I've seen some DJs display, it just wouldn't look nice with our formal wedding. I'm totally fine with them advertising their business on a smaller scale. Also, he provided me with a pdf where I list all the songs for each event at the wedding and a "do not play" playlist. He also has a timeline for the night already that I can customize if I need to. He also said they work with the photographer we hired to make sure we get all the photos we need before the photographer leaves for the night.

We met with two in person and chose ours based off his style. We are pretty chill people and did not want anything crazy. When one dj said he would bring glow sticks to throw into our crowd and with all his dj lights we knew not to pick him over the other dj who was very calm and would play more music of what we wanted not what he wanted.

Our venue only had two companies they worked with for additional lighting/ceiling decor because of the tall ceilings. Both companies were dj companies so we figured it would be best to combine as many services as possible. Both companies had great reviews, but we chose the one that had slightly cheaper prices and had the fabric draping I wanted.

Agree with all the people above about professionalism, references, ect. Also if possible (and it was for me) I met with all our vendors. I'm the kinda person that not only goes off the pictures and videos online but also peoples personalities and presence. The DJ can make or break the wedding so it was very important for myself and FH to click with all of our vendors. Don't settle until you really like someone Smiley smile
