How do you smile pretty for photos?

Yam, on August 8, 2019 at 11:20 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 14
Because I’m pretty sure this cat is how I look when I smile. My face tightens up. I’ve never smiled naturally and beautifully in photos unless I was actually laughing. I’m worried I’ll tense up too much in front of the camera!

Lol - ing at the cat!

In all seriousness, it's possible your photographer can provide tips to help you not look like said cat. A good photographer will help photos to look more natural and not forced or stiff!

Hey Yam!! This cat is super cute!!

If you are worried about feeling self-conscious about your wedding photos, you should talk about this with your photographer. They will be a pro at putting people at ease and making them feel relaxed in front of the camera.

You could also talk to your SO about your worries, there is no reason why you can’t chat amongst yourselves and laugh during your shoot. The photographer will then be able to get some great shots of you both laughing together and you will most likely forget about being photographed.

The cat is killing me! But this might sound silly, but I'm practicing my smile more often. My photographer suggested it to me. My FH has a perfect smile every time, me, I can look awkward sometimes without trying. My photographer is big on candid's so hopefully she will get the natural smiles. We have our engagement shoot in November.

Definitely try to relax, and you can and should talk to your FS during the shoot to keep things lighthearted. A tip I got from the guy who took my high school senior pictures has stayed with me ever since then: smile, and then say or mouth the word "yes" right before the picture is taken. It makes you open your mouth a little more and kind of relax a little bit. It sounds silly, but I definitely do it anytime I'm trying to get a good picture.

Good point! I’ll see if my photographer can remind me to actually smile. It just doesn’t happen for me on my own in front of a camera!

I love that! At least I’d look genuinely happy if we were talking during the shoot. Those happy muscles just don’t come out when I’m focused on the camera.

Ah just in front of a mirror? I think I get awkward doing it because I don’t like my teeth, I have a little “fang”? I guess, on one side. I’m aware of my teeth too much. Do you think closed mouth smiling still can look nice in photos?

You'll be so happy on the day that you won't even have to think about it! I have done professional photography before and always felt sort of awkward in front of the camera, but on my wedding day I was SO full of joy that I didn't feel awkward at all and was just truly smiling from ear to ear!

That gives me hope! I just can’t fake happiness. I definitely don’t look happy in other photos. On my wedding day I know I’ll be absolutely giddy!

I read somewhere that if you put your tongue to the roof in your mouth and open your teeth a little, it looks more real. Probably what I was doing in this picture haha. I seems to work for me.
