How early before your wedding did you book your honeymoon?

Nicole, on February 7, 2014 at 1:54 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 23

Hello, so my wedding is December 2015 (seems sooooo far away!). We have already researched and decided on a honeymoon location and resort, but feel like we are crazy for wanting to book this early. How far in advance did you book your honeymoon??

IT is never too early! IMO. Plus the earlier you book the better rates and deals you receive. I am getting married in September this year and we booked a month ago! I can't wait

We booked our hotel & flight within the last two weeks! If you book this far in advance, my advice is just make sure it's refundable, in case you change your mind where you're going or even if the date would maybe change.

The resort isn't going anywhere. It's unlikely they'll be sold out. And, you might change your minds. Yes, really. If the resort would happen to file bankruptcy or anything like that, you're out what you put down or paid. This far out, there's no advantage. Wait until you're less than a year away.

You definitely won't be able to book flights this early.

I don't think its every to early either. I will say you will definitely need to hold off on flights because I found that most airlines did not have flight schedules available until January for me. I started looking for flights to Hawaii around Christmas for our honeymoon found that airlines like Southwest and Airtran won't book further than 7 months out.

I think if you are planning on going through a travel agent they should be able to keep an eye on that for you as far as booking the flights in the right amount of time.

We get married 5/31. We leave for the HM 6/8. He had our travel agent start looking when we set the date in June and the HM was booked 2 weeks ago.

I think it depends on where you are going. If it's a large resort with a lot of rooms, you can probably wait until a couple of months before. If you are wanting to go to a smaller resort that has individual huts or something like that, you may want to do that sooner as those do tend to book up quickly.

We are going to Belize for our honeymoon. We put off reserving anything until December because we figured that would give us plenty of time. When we went to book our resort (one that had individual casitas instead of a large resort with lots of rooms), there was only ONE casita left. We jumped on it.

If you're really worried about it and you already know where you want to stay, maybe call the hotel and ask them how quickly their rooms tend to sell out.

We couldn't book till less than a year. We are going overseas and it wouldn't let us buy tickets more than a year in advance. If you know where you are going and can book, I'd go for it

I think it's still very early! Usually you can't book flights until within a year of travel. We booked our honeymoon about 6-7 months out.

You cant book flights until 335 days or something before the trip. I would be hesitant booking somewhere that wouldnt have daily flights without knowing the flight schedule.

I could have booked our honeymoon for an amazing price at the 335 day mark when I started looking, but I was scared I would change my mind.

Prices have gone up, so I am hoping they will come down once we get out of winter.

Not so worried about places selling out considering its off season down south at that time.

But considering your getting married during a peak travel time, I would recommend you start researching, make you decision and when flights become available then book. Typically vacations are cheaper the earlier you book.

I don't know about you guys, but when I go on expedia now it only goes out partially to Jan 2015, so I'm thinking its not feasible to book more than a year in advance. That being said, I'm hoping to book mine at the one year mark this August, or shortly thereafter if the schedules are not out by then.

ETA: I would book ASAP because 1) My HM will be during peak season because of summer, 2) I'm hoping for an overwater bungalow type so those book quicker 3) I want to save as much money as possible without being last minute and 4) I'm just super excited! lol

Thank you everyone! We are planning to go to St Lucia at a hotel that only has a few rooms. I know we will not be able to book flights for some time now, but wasn't sure if I should book he hotel to secure it. Part of the reason is because I am known to change my mind a lot but once I finalize something will stick with it!

When we were looking no sites or even travel agents could book anything out until about 9 months before, just because flights weren't available yet.

You should book it as early as possible! I know that they would not let us book ours quite that far in advance, just because of the specific hotel's policy. However if they will let you book it now, you should. Resorts tend to book up very quickly. Also, it may be cheaper to book it sooner than later, especially if you are flying to the location. December flights are insanely expensive if they are not booked early enough in advance! Not to mention, you will get a the first choice in reservations for dinner or other events, which is very nice. I'd recomend booking it soon because it's just another big "to do" that can be marked off of your list! Smiley smile

I booked my honeymoon to Italy 6 months in advance, which was shortly after we got engaged so everything's been pretty quick to decide!

We're getting married December 2015 as well. We're booking our June 2016 honeymoon for Turks & Caicos and having a difficult time due to availability. FH is getting frustrated. We maybe going in July or August.

Nicole, what hotel in St. Lucia are you looking at? St. Lucia was our 2nd choice after Belize but coming from the west coast we didn't want to spend that much time traveling.

We only JUST decided to take a honeymoon, and we're staying in the US for ours. Since we're going to be dealing with holiday pricing, we want to book early, but right now, we can't book our flight anyway (I'm not flying United, so we're waiting for JetBlue to show their flights in December/January).

Studies show that ~2 months out is the best time to buy flights.... yes prices come *DOWN* before going back up again.

Hotels usually go up without much of a dip unless they're below projected occupancy in which case you'll get lucky and catch a sale. Keep in mind that many hotels' best public rates are pre-paid, but using AAA discount, you can often get that same rate, but refundable. Usually the best play is to book the cheapest refundable rate as early as possible and monitor the hotel's website and social media pages for sales. If a sale period hits your stay dates, then just call the hotel and change your rate to the sale rate.

Very far in advance (9+ months), I've also had luck calling the hotel and asking to speak to the general manager. I'll ask what rate they can offer if I book direct over the phone (that day) and pre-pay the reservation. Normally s/he offers a rate at least a bit lower than the published rate.
