It might depend where you live and how many officiants are around; but we booked ours about 1 year out. When we booked the venue they told us to be sure to book the officiant ASAP because they book up quickly.

From my experience, it is best to book the following items a year out:

    - venue

    - photographer

    - officiant

    - DJ

Edit to add: Booking this far out to get good ones. You can book them with less notice, but there is a good chance that the photographer/venue/officiant etc. that you really want will be booked already if they have a good reputation. Also, hair and make-up can book up quicker than I expected, so I'd aim for those about 6 months out.

Book your officiant after you have your venue. IMO you don't really have a date until you have a venue. Also if the officiant charges travel fees how would they know how much to charge you without a location.

B/c we knew who we wanted to Marry us we reached out to our Priest immediately and told him.

Which was really a great thing in the end for us because he's being transferred to a different Parish.

Since we already booked the church & told him we want him to Officiate he was able to make sure that its all settled before he leaves this June

I contacted someone in like January for our December wedding, and we were pencilled in at that time. We confirmed her in March (after an in-person meeting).

It really depends. We were looking for someone specific (secular and someone we felt comfortable with) so we booked April 2014 and shortly after that he was turning others away for our date. So honestly, as soon as you can, I would say.

Our officiant was the first thing I booked. Sometime in the middle of June 2014. We got engaged May 31st 2014.

We booked ours about a year out. He actually already had a wedding scheduled for our date, but the other one is in the evening and ours is in the afternoon so he is able to do both.

Our officiant is going to be my fiancé's uncle, so we actually didn't ask him and have our first session with him til 3 months out. If you are hiring someone I think maybe 6 months in advanced at least. We probably should have asked ours earlier lol

I would say it's the same with any vendor...if you find one you really like, and the price is in your budget, book asap, or someone else might book them first, and you will be disappointed.

My FIL officiated our wedding and he was the first person to know we were getting married and the date we set (about 21 months before our wedding).
