How far out should you book a venue? 6 months before anticipated date short notice?

Help! Got into an argument with my fiance on when we should book the venue. We're planning for August 31 2019. We already decided on a venue and I told him we should probably book it now to secure the date. He thinks we should book it 6 months prior because he feels booking a year out is too early and that "alot can change in a year". I explained to him we can't wait until the last second to book the venue because then #1 it will get booked on the day we want and #2 we really can't set a date and move forward on booking other vendors without booking the venue. He says booking a year ahead is illogical cause alot can change. Is my thinking illogical? I think a year is basically the standard. How far in advance do you book the venue? I almost feel like just going ahead and booking it without him. We already agreed on the venue so why should we wait?

My fiancé and I got engaged in June and two weeks later we booked our venue for August 3rd 2019. It’s impoetant to start looking now! Not that the date we wanted wasn’t available at all of the venues we looked at, but we were worried it wouldn’t be available if we waited any longer. Plus once you secure your venue you need to start looking for photographers and other vendors as those book up fast! We’re still looking for a photographer and luckily many still have our date even though it is a Saturday wedding. But waiting until 6 months before the wedding would be soooo stressful to plan everything!! Plus it doesn’t give you much time to send save the dates (if you’re sending them) and invites. Hopefully your fiancé will agree to start looking and getting quotes from venues! You can also call them for quotes beforehand to see if they’re worth the visit.

We booked 2 years out and they were already getting calls for other events around that time. We picked a low month but they said that they take bookings 3 years out regularly.

Definitely not too early. I had less than a year to plan and almost every Saturday for the following year was booked. I had 1 Saturday to pick from. There were a lot of Fridays and Sundays but that was a last resort. I took the last available Saturday our venue had for 2018.

Idk if you can do this but my venue let us put a a hold on a day until we made up our mind for 2 weeks. I would check to see if you can just hold it and then decide from there
