I want to have an engagement party to be able to celebrate with mutual friends and family. FH says he wants one, too, but he keeps procrastinating in confirming a date with me. I've proposed multiple dates, and his reasoning is wanting to fix up the house before inviting people over. Really the biggest thing is fixing the back porch, which could be done in a day or two. I'm just getting frustrated and don't really know where else we could host it.

You don't need one, but they're a lot of fun!

Not having one. It's not super common around here. Just invite people over when the back porch is over and spend time with close ones. Doesn't need to be an added stress. Enjoy your engagement!

We didn't have one & personally, I've never heard of anyone in my circle having one. I think it's fine to throw yourself a party, as long as you make it known that no gifts are expected/just want to hang with friends/family. If you expect gifts, then I would hold out-n-see if someone will be hosting one for you.

If you are in a new home, perhaps a housewarming party?

ETA, I also like PP's idea of just hosting a dinner party or like catlady5x suggestions.
