We knew each other thru work for 2.5 years. Dated for 5.5 years before he proposed. Getting married on our 6th anniversary and then again a few days after our seventh anniversary (church wedding).

We were together just a little more than 8 months. Sounds crazy, I know. But we had been friends for 6.5 years before dating.

Yas! That's what we're going for as well. Sometimes when I read people's and they are saying 1 year, 2 years, it almost gives me a cold sweat. Just curious - were you guys thinking about marriage as the long-term plan from the beginning?

The way my partner and I have talked about it, maybe the 1 or 2 year people are logical since we really didn't talk marriage until about a year ago - so if you come in with the "I want to be married" mindset, I guess that's natural.

We thought long-term happiness and supporting each other - just not by the "marriage" name until more recently due to thoughts on healthcare, end of life planning/ security and just overall societal respect. If he gets in a car accident, his "long-term partner" of 10 years can't make health decisions, but somehow a wife with a year is quite qualified. ....le sigh.

Congrats - both on your upcoming wedding and the decade before. Smiley tongue

I never viewed marriage as the “goal” of a relationship. We were also just focused on loving and supporting each other long term. We talked about long term life plans and made sacrifices for each other with the idea that the relationship was permanent but we didn’t feel the need to get married right away. (And neither of us were ready to get married a year or two into the relationship.) We do want to get married for the legal and social reasons you’ve mentioned but I don’t feel that our time together prior to marriage was any less of a commitment to each other. The only difference is now we’re making that commitment public (and legal).
