How Long Did You Wait To Start Wedding Planning After Getting Engaged?

It's easy to want to plan out the entire wedding as soon as you get engaged! However, not everyone starts planning right away. Some couples wait so they can spend time enjoying the engagement and sharing the news with their friends and families. Others start planning before they're actually engaged. How long after getting engaged did you wait before jumping into wedding planning? Did you start planning immediately? Did you wait a few weeks (or even a few months)? Or did you start planning before officially getting engaged?

That is awesome!! Saves you a lot of work by being all-inclusive. And 10% discount may not sound like much, but I know that it definitely adds up quickly and can save you quite a bit!

Pretty much everything worked out as I had imagined. Only thing is my dress is so different from what I had pictured. I guess it's just weird seeing yourself in a wedding gown for the first time lol. that and the budget. I thought I could have a wedding in NYC for 100 people for 15k lmaoo boy was I off. But we've been organized so it all worked out thank God!

Thank you! We have contacted around 15 venues and have toured two so far. Several more are in the works and scheduled.

It is definitely weird to see yourself in a wedding gown for the first time! When I was trying on dresses, I remember the first dress just felt like I was playing dress-up lol. And I think it's common to end up with a completely different dress than what you initially imagined - I ended up with a style I thought I hated at first, lol. What are the differences between the dress you pictured and the dress you bought?

I started planning right after we got engaged. My FH basically just told me to do what made me happy but I'd ask for his opinion on a lot of things. The downside to planning as far ahead as we did (about 16 months) we did wind up losing money on a venue when we decided we would need to move the venue closer due to various reasons.

Now we're basically starting from square one in the planning department minus the photographer and DJ.

Sorry to hear that you lost money on your original venue! Unfortunately, that is a risk when booking far in advance (though booking far in advance has its benefits too). At least you still have your photographer and DJ booked! I'm sure you'll find the perfect venue soon!

My husband and I started right away. We planned our wedding in 10 months. We got engaged in April or 2019, we made our mock guest list & had our venue picked and the deposit & 1st payment made by the beginning on May 2019. I had my dress, our photographer & bridal party picked by June 2019. We took a break from planning over the summer because that's my busy season at work, but we still made decisions like our color scheme, food, decor, picked out the colors & fabrics for husband's custom suit to be made and so on. I also made the bouquets for my bridesmaids and I and picked out more decor, and just kept going from there. Once we got our venue picked everything else seemed to fall into place.

We started planning 9 months after getting engaged, but that was due to COVID. We got engaged right at the start of lockdowm and slowly came to terms with the fact that we weren't going to be able to have our 2021 wedding. So, we put a pause on it until the vaccines starting rolling out. We're now set for 2022 which is a longer engagement than we wanted but oh well!

Awesome!! I think 10 months is a great timeframe for planning a wedding, and very cool that you even got to take a planning break over that summer! I agree, once the venue is secured, making decisions on everything else just seems to be easier. You said you made the bouquets for your bridesmaids - did you use the Sola wood flowers? Or silk? Or real?

At least you hadn't started planning yet at the time of the lockdowns! I think you were smart to wait to see where things with COVID went before starting planning. My fiance and I are also now having a much longer engagement than originally planned, about 3 years instead of 1 year, due to postponing from the pandemic. How are your plans going for 2022? Have you found a venue and such yet?

We're so glad we held off, but at the time it was hard to delay to a 2.5 year engagement! Planning is going well so far, though it seems like we have to be so quick because everything is filling up earlier than usual. We've booked our venue and officiant, and are looking at photographers and DJ now. After that I think we can take a break until late 2021/early 2022 for the rest Smiley smile

A 2.5 year engagement sounds long, but it definitely flies by! Glad to hear planning is going well so far! And I agree, vendors are certainly booking up quicker than normal. And yes - once you have your vendors secured, time for a well deserved break from the stress of wedding planning!

I was preplanning months before he actually proposed! I knew it was only a matter of time. We got engaged three weeks ago. That little preplanning I was doing helped me get an overall feel for what I wanted. Although we are not having our wedding until late next year, we are in full planning mode.

    Thank you!

I have decided to DIY most of the decor for the wedding and all of the bridal bouquets. I'm pretty excited about that! I have created a vision board for my wedding dress and the overall look of the decor. The color scheme has been picked out and the rough draft of the guest list has been compiled. I have a good idea as to a few vendors I will be working with. Aaaaaaaaand we are currently closing in on securing our venue.

We got engaged May 2020 and started planning in September for 9/17/22. With the pandemic going on we wanted to wait to see how things progressed. We booked the venue in September and I've just booked our photographer and about to book the catering. I'm not sure if I should start looking for other vendors yet or wait haha
