How long do alterations take?

Amanda, on October 6, 2016 at 6:19 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 12

I'm just wondering. My wedding is in January. I'm adding sleeves (I already have the fabric) and I need to get it hemmed. I wanted to wait to begin alterations until I lose a little weight, in case we need to take it in. When is the absolute latest I could wait until bringing it in? How long do alterations typically take?

This really varies by the tailor, so I'd ask them for a timeframe. But, on average most places don't like starting on your alterations until about 1-2 months before your wedding because they know bodies change (intentionally and unintentionally).

It depends on the shop I guess. I had to wait a month for mine. I had the hem line shortened and the bust, sides and hips taken in. I would suggest not more than 2 months prior to your wedding.

Check with whoever is doing your alterations they can tell you how much time they need.

At this point - i would work on maintaining than losing weight. I would get alterations started now because you should have a few fittings before your final. Plus, with the holiday season approaching, timelines for your tailor may vary and you want to account for that.

Varies by shop. My first fitting was Sept. 24 for a wedding on Oct. 31. That's cutting it closer than I would have under different circumstances (long, boring story) and there's extremely little to be done on my dress.

It definitely varies - I started my fittings in June, but she actually preferred to start later in July. I didn't need much taken in or hemmed, so it was pretty straightforward. I would just ask, but I would start no later than 8ish weeks before.

My seamstress told me about 6 weeks but I just need cups sewed and it taken in a bit on the top. I'm sure it varies with how much you need to have done to it, but I'm sure your seamstress will be able to give you a time frame.

Most places have told me to schedule the first alterations appointment 8 weeks out.
