How long does a dress take to get altered?

AshelyJ., on August 9, 2017 at 5:44 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 23

I dropped off my dress 3 months ago to get altered. My mother insisted my godmother do my dress, so I took it to her. She is only taking the dress up two inches. We are not taking it in or fixing anything else but the length. I have tried calling her 4 times and so has my mother and she never returns our calls. Does it normally take this long? I still have a little over two months before we get married, but some communication would be nice. I am starting to overthink that maybe my dress got ruined, she had to order another, and is trying to fix it w/o me knowing. (Probably not the case, but who knows!)

I think 3 months is a bit lengthy. It took mine only 1 month for hemming, taking in the back and sides.

That seems lengthy. Your seamstress may have other brides with earlier weddings though that are priority.

ETA: Sometimes when we pass a job like this off to a friend or godmother in this case, they feel like they have right to do it at their leisure and not make it a priority.

I've had full custom dresses made in a week. Three months is rather lengthy for alterations.

I dropped mine off on the August 5th for the same thing and go back on September 1st. I'm going to assume it's taking that long because mine isn't the only dress they're doing. So 3 months is way too long.

Ugh this stresses me out. I know I still have time, but still. No communication.

If it's your godmother, can you pay her a visit to her house or ask your mom to make contact?

I can't say anything better because I dropped my dress off on June 25 and it's still not done. I get married in 15 days. You can say my nerves are getting torn up.

Maybe the length of time isn't long but the fact that she won't answer a call is SHADY. I would be worried and stopping by her alterations shop for sure.

It depends on the alterations but certainly not 3 months just to have your dress hemmed. I am having my entire wedding dress made in 3 months. Sadly, this is why most of us advise against "friendors" doing things for your wedding because you usually have little control and no recourse against them. Can you visit her in person?

Honestly not that long BUT if she did ruin it and bought a new one- at least she's replacing it completely. Maybe just figure out if that's what happen and take the new dress elsewhere.

She probably hasn't done it yet and is avoiding your calls so she doesn't have to admit it. Keep on her

I took my dress to be fit on the 7th and I go back to get it on the 18th! I thought it would take a few months.

I take my dress in next week for my first fitting and I'm 12 weeks out. I will have 3-4 fittings up until mid-October. Depends on how busy the seamstress is and what they have to alter. I don't think a hem would take too long, but I'd leave a message if she doesn't answer and ask for an ETA.

Yikes. For a hem? My Aunt hemmed my mother's dress for my wedding in a day.

My gown was altered at the bridal salon and had a lot more done than a hem, and it took just 2 weeks. I actually don't think it even takes that long, they just have a lot of dresses to work on.

Is she a professional? I would drop by and ask in person.

My dress needs a lot of alterations, hem, take in at the hips, cups sewn in, straps shortened, bustle added. I had my initial appointment a month ago, and I have the second fitting in two days with the third scheduled for a few weeks after that.

But in the four weeks since I dropped it off, they're supposed to have done the cups, straps waist and installed the bustle.

The reason its taking so long is because its your godmother. Are you paying her? She might not feel like its a priority because she is a "friendor".
