How long does it take to get marriage license?

Laurie, on June 25, 2015 at 3:20 PM Posted in Married Life 0 19

Does anyone know the answer to this and does it get mailed to us or do we need to go get it at Town Hall? I'm just curious as I would like to start the arduous task of changing my name.

We went to city hall and got ours, got married, had it signed, and mailed the signed copy in. It took about two weeks to get the official copy back in the mail.

It took just under two weeks for us to get our official copy back. It may vary depending on your state/county.

In NY we walked in and got it, it has to be within 60 days of the wedding day, but no later then 48 hours before. They then told us they wanted it mailed within 5 business days. My MOH mailed it out Sunday for our Friday wedding. We received in the followed week after our honeymoon, so it took a week and half for the filed to get to us

We got ours on that Monday after the wedding. We live in VA so you can get it same day as long as the officiant has signed it.

I haven't gotten the certified copy of ours that we were supposed to be sent back, but I did order two more copies around June 17th and received those in the mail last Thursday.

Thanks Maltese. We have to call Town Hall the day we want to get it and I guess they give us a price. Ripoff! We already paid to apply.

What is a ripoff about it? You pay to apply and have your license application processed, then you pay for certified copies. Usually they'll be 10 bucks or less.

If you're going in person you can used your signed Certificate. You only need certified copies if you are mailing it and don't want to lose it.

I agree with Tania & Jason. I feel like the cost of copies should be included in the original price. Oh well. I am pretty sure we can afford the $10 or whatever it is. Smiley smile

In Illinois, we got ours the same day and the first certified copy was free and I think $2 after that.

Welcome to wedding license land......I can't even tell my NJ couples how much they cost; every town is different.

I tell my couples to get three copies; one for a safe place, and two to shop around to all the places that need it ;-)
