How long in advance should I start looking for a wedding dress?

SeaMermaid, on May 6, 2017 at 5:12 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 15

I announced my engagement two weeks ago. My wedding day for more than a year, so I am planning next few days to look for a dress. Is it on time or is too early? If I get pregnant, that is possible, although I am breastfeeding, what will you advice me to do?

It seems most brides start looking one-year out. Since you are getting married in June you could start now as it may need to be ordered unless you find something off the rack. In relation to getting pregnant that would clearly impact your dress. If you find a dress now and get pregnant let's say in June will you really be back to your current weight months after the baby is born? You would know best but that seems risky to me, even ordering bigger.

I'd say NLT 10 months out. Give yourself time for weight fluctuations and alterations.

Hey girl. Congratulations on the engagement.

We got engaged on Christmas 2016, I had a bridal appointment in March to just look at dresses. I found one that i loved and ordered the dress. I didnt do any alterations at all for it, but I am able to go as low as a 14. Our wedding isn't till next winter, but I don't think its too soon at all.

Have you guys figured out a date yet?

Usually you start looking a year out for a dress. I am unsure what advice to you give on the possible pregnancy except for talking to the bridal salon and possibly ordering a corset back dress so it is more adjustable.

My wedding is June of this year. I bought mine in September and had it in by early March. If you're indecisive, I would start looking a little earlier. I've heard stories about it taking much longer to get a dress in.

Most dresses need to be ordered 6-9months in advance. For this reason, many brides start looking 1 year in advance, which is when I purchased. No dress regret here. But many brides do experience dress regret so once you purchase a dress STOP looking. Always consider the cost of alterations when purchasing, and order 1-2 size up to account for weight changes. As for advice regarding pregnancy, choose a fit and flare style of dress or a dress with a corset back. If you continue to TTC, then maybe purchase 6 months out and be prepared if need be for a dress off the rack.

Are you TTC right now? Are you planning on giving birth before the wedding day?

I started looking 9 months out and purchased about 8 months before the wedding day. I wanted to have a venue before purchasing a dress. Although if I were you, #1-10 on my To Do list would be getting some birth control because I don't see how a dress can be altered that much, even with a corset back. Most shops will not let you change the order once it's placed, so you want to be as confident as possible that the size you ordered will fit. Otherwise, I would wait until 3-4 months before the wedding and buy a dress off the rack .

ETA: don't mean to sound harsh, but being pregnant can be a dress game changer, so I think it's important to either try to not be pregnant or plan to wait as long as possible so you can get something that can be altered.

I don't plan to give birth before my wedding day or to be pregnant at my wedding day, but sometimes you get it that you don't expect. But I will try to not happen it. I agree that it's risky.

    Some dresses that I like:

6 months to a year is a good time to start looking. If there's a chance you'll get pregnant, consider ballgowns since they're more forgiving in the waist.

I would say 9 or 10 months out, to allow for alterations and the like

I bought mine at 8 months out (or ordered rather)

I agree with not getting a fitted dress if there's a chance you'll get pregnant.

Ballgowns or empire would be good.

My wedding date is one day after yours! I found my dress in March. It takes 11 months to come in, so I'm glad I started early. Enjoy dress shopping!
