How long is the average engagement in your area

AyEmVee, on September 23, 2016 at 3:25 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 35

Just out of curiosity, how long would you say the average engagement is where you live? What would you say is the average age of marriage?

I ask because, well, in Utah, most people are engaged for roughly 4-5 months and get married around 21/22ish.

I'm 26 and my engagement will be 10 months long. I'm constantly getting "why are you having such a long engagement?" Which is fine, I understand why their engagements are so short (religious reasons). I thought my engagement length was about average, and then I jumped on here and saw that sometimes people have 2-3 year engagements. So now I'm wondering if I'm more on the shorter side of average.

Again, this is purely for curiosity reasons. Just interesting to see how things vary in different areas of the U.S. (or even outside the U.S.)

I got engaged 5/12/16 and our wedding date is 04/15/17 and I guess that's a normal wait because a girl I know got engaged last month and is planning her wedding for this November and everyone is asking her why so fast? Lol

Im from new york and our engagement is about a year and a half. That seems to be pretty normal amongst the people I know. Could also be things are a bit pricey out here.

This might have more to do with the type of community you're in. I went to a Christian college where it was very common for people to get married in college or right after. Their engagement were typically short. However, the actual area was near Chicago, so I highly doubt it's the same for the whole area. I think it typically depends what works best in each case.

On average, I feel like a typical engagement is 1.5 years. I have waited what felt like forever to get engaged... so we are having a short engagement of just 10 months. I got engaged on Valentine's day this year and I am getting married in December of this year.

I'm having a 14 month engagement, which I feel is pretty average for here in Seattle. Where I went to high school (small town. large Mormon population) girls get married in like, 4 months. So when I go visit home, everyone asks me "Why so long?" and when I'm here in Seattle everyone says, "Oh good, you gave yourself time."

I think it has a lot to do that bigger citys equal more people with means venues/vendors get booked faster, so you have to push it out to get everything you want.

ETA: I would say average in our area for age is 30ish. We are in the "youngsters" category getting married at 23 & 25

We are 28 and live near a big city, we have been dating 4 years and are having a 6 month engagement, which most people think is crazy short. Most of my friends have done at least 1 or 1.5 years.

I'm not sure but I had an 8 month (almost 9) engagement and actually had a few vendors scoff at me and one even rolled her eyes and told me good luck when I told her when I'd need invitations by. So my guess is that it's a lot longer than 9 months in the Philly area. lol

In California in the Bay Area I would say average age to get married is early 30's and most engagements last a year or so.

Okay so average over here is crazy. We're in an EXPENSIVE area where there aren't a lot of jobs.. so seriously everyone lives at home forever because a 1bdrm apt ranges 1600-2k (unreasonable for a lot of people- myself included)

What I'm finding is people either are super young (20ish) or like 30 !!

And the young people it's usually bc the guy decides to join military and they move on base or out of state.

As far as engagement length, yeah probably 6 months.

As for myself, we've been together over 6 years and so far engaged for 3.5 by the time of our wedding. And no surprise, we're moving out of state the week after the wedding because it's too $$$ here! So we had a long engagement but we only picked a date last month!

    (Also, I'm 25, he's 26)

    Edit - from southern california

There has been an almost constant stream of people I knew in Delaware from high school and college that have been getting married since I was 22 (I'm about to turn 30). I guess that would put the average there around 26. It always seemed like most engagements were around a year long.

Here in AZ, I've noticed that most of the couples I know that have gotten married were under 25, and some aren't finished with college, yet. I'd guess the average is around 23. I'd guess 9 months as the average length of an engagement. I've seen some pretty short ones, and also ones that were close to a year.

I'm from NJ and I'd say most people here (at least that I know who got married) do about a year and then however many months it takes to get them to their season they want to get married in. So say you get engaged Christmas day, you do one year and then if you want to get married in the spring it is that spring (so 14-16 months), if you want fall it is that next fall (so 20-22 months). I wanted a winter wedding and got engaged on New Years day so our engagement is exactly 1 year and I always get questions on why I am rushing. Which it really doesn't feel like I'm rushing but whatever.

I don't have the data broken down by region, but the average engagement length is 13 months!

I typically see people in my area engaged for around a year. Mine is going to be 2 years and I've been getting grief about it from some family members saying it's too long. I'm from Michigan by the way.

In Tennessee, we will have been engaged 18 months and will be 26 years old, everyone is giving us a hard time about 18 months. We're old compared to most, but where I'm from engagements are 1-2 years and people get married between 28-30

I'm from Connecticut and the average engagement length I would say is a year. We are having a two year engagement, though. We will be 27 and 28, which I'd say seems pretty common around here (maybe a bit on the younger side, but not by much)

I'm from a small town in Georgia. Around here I would say the average age is between 22-25. Engagements are generally short about 6 months to a year. People think we are ridiculous for having an 18 month engagement.

I don't know what the average is in Seattle but I know I had a short engagement (5 months). Both of my sisters had engagements over 15+ months.
