How long is your first dance song?

SA Bride!, on October 4, 2013 at 4:36 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 17

I am in 100 minds about our song... I've decided I want a slow song because we haven't had formal dance training and I don't want to attempt a faster tempo.

I wanted Billy Joel You're My Home but I'm not sure now.

There is another beautiful song by Judas Priest that is slow, but it's almost five minutes long!

    SAB2B-

No worries on the length! I tell my couples that it is super easy for me to fade out before the end of the song if they are getting uncomfortable. I just tell them to give me a slight nod or knowing look, I fade out & say "let's hear it once again for Mr & Mrs..." and pretty much no one is the wiser.

To tell you the truth, I do this more on Father-Daughter or Mother-Son dances. You'll be surprised how fast your first dance will go. Time kind of stops- you are in that intimate moment with your groom, and all of a sudden the song is done. Hard to explain, but the moment is heightened- something you share & will remember always.

Use whatever song really speaks to you. There is no right or wrong. If you still think you'd be uncomfortable up there for 5 min, have the DJ call up your BP, or family or guests to 1/2 way thru to share it with you. But my advice is pick the song & have fun. Don't be surprised if you forget to give the DJ the nod & find you've danced the whole song! GL!

I can't decide either. I was thinking of a swing or jazz song or something more 1950's. I am just so picky!

We are only playing about 1min 30 secs. I hate that, but once I maid FH practice dancing to our song, I realized that crap was wayyy too long. And unless we planned on breaking out into a crazy dance (which we are not), there was no point in playing the whole thing.

Plus, at every wedding I've been to, I pay attention to like the first 30 secs of the first dance, say my "Awwww" then Im good lol

    Mine is 4 minutes exactly.

SA, I know you'll appreciate this song, being that you and I are both old souls.

If you like, you should use. We can be song twins. xoxoxo

    KC was absolutely right!!

And S2BMrsReed... I'm with you on that the guests start to lose interest after awhile, myself included when I'm one of the guests.

BUT when it's you and your Husband up there dancing for the 1st time, everyone else just kind of disappears. You won't care if they're watching you or what the hell they're doing!

It's your day. Your one and only 1st dance as husband and wife. The guests can be bored for 3-5 minutes. They'll survive. Enjoy every minute of it! Smiley smile

ETA... Even though as I guest I've lost interest after a while, I have never left a wedding thinking to myself "Why the heck did they dance so long!"

    Nice choice, Tatiana!

SA, is it Angel by Judas Priest? I looked at that one...

I'd normally go with classic rock of some sort, but while FI prefers rock/metal, he's not *as* into classic rock as me.

So, on my "short" list are:

    Still Loving You - Scorpions

    Sleep - Savatage

    Angel - Judas Priest

    Forever Yours - Nightwish

    Is this Love - Whitesnake

Fur Immer OR Love Song - Warlock

You Won My Love - Doro

All are between 3:50-4:50, but we can either dance to it or move on to the next song.

Private User- I keep switching songs and I don't know which one to pick.

Soon2beMrs.Reed, I know I'm the same... I clap for a bit and then lose interest.

Belais, yeah either Angel or Last Rose of Summer. My FH is a HUGE Judas Priest fan and we made an agreement that if he can find a nice ballad, we can use one of his favourite band's song. Thank goodness it was Judas Priest and not Overkill or someone. Smiley smile I will listen to all your songs on Monday.

Tatiana, that is a gorgeous song! I've sent it to FH for him to hear.

When we took dance lessons, our instructor told us that most guests start losing interest at around 2 - 2 1/2 min. We edited our song to fit that.

I am considering the song "Everything" by Lifehouse, which is super long. If I go with that song I'll have my BP come join us on the dance floor when the song speeds up.

We're leaning towards C'est la mort by the Civil Wars. It's a beautiful tune, and nice and short.
