How long was/is your premarital counseling?

Private User, on February 3, 2013 at 7:59 PM Posted in Planning 1 12

We just asked my FH's grandfather to be our officiant and he told us there would be 20 hours premarital counseling. Yikes! Compared to my sisters 3 hours.

Is that the same as marriage preparation? We are going every Wednesday for 2 hours for 6 weeks. I've heard others just have a weekend course.

Yea it's the same. I guess that's just what his grandpa calls it. FH is annoyed at it but I know it's important to everyone that he does it

We have 3-4 hours. 20 seems like a lot.

We did a two day thing, Friday evening and then Saturday morning to early afternoon. In total, probably about 8 hours.

5 meetings, we've had two so far they both lasted about an hour and we usually meet at a coffee or doughnut shop. It's not so bad but yeah 20 hours is a lot!

Ours was 4 hours on a Saturday night and then 9-5 on Sunday so 12 hours total and that included a mass at the end.

We are attending a weekend long Engaged Encounter (Friday 8pm to Sunday 5pm)

We also have to meet with our priest a few times (not sure exactly how often, but sessions are 1-2 hours each).

Marriage is a lifetime so depending on how old you are, it could be 50 years or so. 20 hours isn't close enough to the amount of time you need preparing for 50 years LOL

My FFIL is our officiant and just told us we would need 12 weeks counseling. I was like ummmm no. First of all, FH and I barely see eachother twice a month, and neither time in the same location. 2nd of all, FFIL doesn't live close to either of us, so idk where he thinks this counseling is going to be held. Plus I dont want some deep counseling from a relative. Thats awkward. I told FH if he can figure out how to use skype or something, I can make a couple hours of time available every other weekend for a few weeks. I just dont have time to listen to someone ramble over do's and don'ts.
